About LarryFNigh

Writing is a passion of mine. As is the theater. Acting, singing, and dancing on stage are fairly newfound joys for me. They will get more of my time as I learn more about my craft.

I served in the Navy for four years as a Spanish linguist, spending tours in Cuba and Panama. I served in the Army National Guard for nine years in a field artillery unit. I worked in fire control and also was the section leader of a Meteorological unit, sending up weather balloons to capture data used in calculating proper firing trajectories for Howitzer cannons.

I'm happy that so many have found pleasure in my poetry and stories. I hope to continue satisfying those who take the time and effort to dip into my writing.

If you're new here, welcome. Most of us are friendly around here. And open to forming new friendships. I know I am.

It's nice to know that I have published the most stories and poems here on our site. And I'm proud that my readers have made me the most viewed writer here.

Recommended Read Learning to Swim.

The day was hot and muggy. Summer in the Ozarks. The creek flowed slowly, pooling quietly enough for the water skippers to stride over the surface. One could smell the apple scent they painted on the gentle breeze. The father held his son up, standing in the deepest point, hand on a skinny belly. The dog paddle was perfected. The rest of the afternoon spent learning that stroke. There...

Before There Was We

Before there was we there was you And when you were young all was new. Do you think about that. I still do. Before there was we there was you. *** Before there was we there was me And when I was young I was free. But I dreamed about you on my knee. Before there was we there was me. *** Before I brought tears to your eyes They had visions of stars in the skies And they...

Tree of Life

She trips over the tree root. She hasn't been looking down, but up into the treetops. Now she is on the ground with a twisted ankle. It's a mulberry tree, Moira knows that. It's filled with purple and red fruits, some covering the ground. The palms of her hands are dyed with the stain of the berries. So is her linen dress with the half sleeves and the calf length skirt.  She winces slightly...

Trick or Treat

The night is cold. Who will be out tonight? The doorbell rings. "Trick or treat!" Oops, he's out. "C'mon back inside!" Don't scare the tyke. Give her some treats. She smiles, and the door closes. Grinning, I look at him. He looks at me. "Okay, you get one, too." The doorbell rings. "Trick or treat!" Another tyke. More treats. He looks up at me. "Sure." The doorbell rings again...

Recommended Read We Have All The Time In The World

We have all the time in the world It is not denial But acceptance of a higher truth My eyes look upon you and know We will go on No matter what they say It is the only way to live our lives  To the fullest With each day that passes To live without seeing an end To love without crying again To laugh without doubting  And win We have all the time in the world    ...

Sunrise, Sunset

The first sunrise I lived through was in Arkansas. I was born in a small clinic in a small town called Mulberrry. My mother didn't live there. My parents had a rental house in another small town named Alma. But she was lucky enough to give birth to me in a modern facility rather than at home. Not long after that we started our movement around the country. My father's parents had followed...

Clicking on the return key, over and over. Changing the screen. Waiting for it to change.  News is posted online now so you wait for the change. Hitting the return key.  You did your best but never certain what to expect. Going back, again and again, always trying to make it. Wanting and needing to be part of it. This is what life is about. Anticipation. What you wait for and work for...

When Next the Goldenrod Blooms

Sunflowers had just started to bloom. And goldenrod. When first the seige began. Now I only cry alone. Even he won't see it. He musn't see it. It's his battle. Support the troops who go to war. It's a war for him. For us. And we may be losing. I don't want to talk to anyone. A few good friends. Sometimes. Sunflowers and goldenrod are in bloom again. Colors vivid and rich. Like...

Love is a Poem

Know euphoria, know the joy, Play with life as if it's a toy. "What did you say?" Childlike jubilance fills each day, petals of rapture line your way. "Please, for the love of all that's holy, leave me alone." Gaze at the stars, smell flowers bloom, dwell not on death, tomorrow's doom. "You mustn't call to me like this. Don't you understand, Go away." Love is the key to all of...

Let the Wind Caress Your Cheek

Let the wind caress your cheek When I am not here When I must be far away Knowing I will return if I may To touch you with my fingertips Once more Caressing your cheek The way that only I can Let the wind caress your cheek And dry the tears of loss When I am not here When I must be far away Let the wind caress your cheek Until my lips may kiss away your pain Until my love may wash away...

Stories Coauthored By LarryFNigh

Strong heart is beating in a harmony, Each movement set angelically with pride.   So subtle that it matches musically, To center stage exquisite form does glide On pointe, on tiptoe, swaying with the tune The wind caresses, gently singing free. So calm her soul, like summer days in June But every step is like a storm tossed sea Behind sweet lips and eyes, typhoons may hide, With calmness...
