A Warrior Born, Part Two

as the young warrior grew into a man on the plains of Africa

people in our times call his tribe the Maasai

well know cattle herders and ferocious warriors

on the full moon the elders sing and tell their history

around the fire all will sit listening and the youth dream

of a far off time long ago

first one will tell of the tribe settling the Rift Valley as its called now

as the evening moon marches across the sky all wait

for the love songs from the past

tonight there is a special treat

the song of two white lovers

Dutch as they are called in the English tongue

two young lovers lost on the savannah

out of food and water only their love

they trek on over the next and the next hill

grey beasts trumpet telling of their passage

lions lay in the hot afternoon sun watching

as the dutch lovers pass

on their last breath they see the pool

the most lovely site in weeks

the water cool to their lips as they drink

just as the pride takes them both

two lovers at the pool

turning red with dutch blood

the camp so quiet at the way this story goes

a hush not a child speaks

as the elder looks into the fire

to finish this story of two lovers

any day you can see two rose bushes

entwined green and pink buds in the hot sun

green for life and pink for undying love

with time the pool shape changed to be a heart

to honour their love on the plains

two wild rose bushes grow to this day

the tribe called Maasai call it

Pool of Lovers
