Holy Goat!

The story began with the wave of His hand
that created the moon and the stars,
and a rock that was spun ‘round a neighboring sun –
in the space between Venus and Mars.

He changed it from stone that was dead-to-the-bone,
to a world that you wouldn’t believe –
and a garden to boot with some low hanging fruit
for a couple named Adam and Eve.

But when He was done, when the rain and the sun
turned the surface from barren to green,
the ravenous deeds of the kudzu and weeds
would assault their herbaceous cuisine.

Eden was doomed if the presage that loomed
was allowed to continue unchecked,
so Eve said a prayer in defense of their lair,
in the hopes that the Lord would connect.

God felt her pain when He heard her complain,
So he promised to grant her request –
He’d craft her a beast that was fashioned to feast
on whatever its gut could digest.

His sacred design would be sure to combine
All the traits one would have to possess –
an adequate craw to consume all it saw,
so the mission would be a success.

Its head was adorned with a fine set of horns,
for appearance more so than a tool –
in the rear was a chute to deliver the poop
that would cover the garden with fuel.

He taught it to dance with a spirited prance,
gave it ears that would flop all around,
then He added a face that demanded embrace
and a mouth that’s unable to frown.

It had to be smart with a sizeable heart
and a mood that was always upbeat,
a rollicking soul that was hard to control
and some fur from its head to its feet.

He sent down a pair with a note to beware
of their penchant to further their brand –
that each should be placed in a separate space,
or their numbers could get out of hand.

So Eve took the two when they made their debut
and released them on bramble and brush,
and both went to town, mowing everything down,
‘till the garden was fertile and lush.

Eden was spared and success was declared,
thanks to beasts of a custom design –
the best they could get for botanical threats,
be it thistle or bramble or vines.

All that remained was to give it a name,
so they pondered the words on God’s note,
then out of the blue, they knew just what to do –
“from now on we’ll call it THE GOAT!”
