Nightfall: The Greatest Loss

Words of love were spoken.

Trust was asked and given.

Faith in truth was broken.

Hope and hearts were riven.

What does this betoken?

All my life I'd striven

But her oaths were lying.

Even though protesting

Honor, vows were dying.

Pledges made, attesting

To the end denying,

Twisted lies divesting.

*************************

At the start we married

Both our souls into one,

And our hopes we carried

Towards the far horizon.

All our fears we buried

As we shared the bright sun.

Thus I had my reward,

Living dreams together.

Never any discord,

But as feared I lost her.

Out of mankind's vast horde

Claims came from another.

*************************

I waited, I would pray

For the scraps she fed me.

Never knowing which day

She might spare, might agree

To give her friendly way,

To allow, to set free

The smiles, the innocence,

She shared so sparingly.

Her joy was, in a sense,

All I had. Daringly

I asked for the essence

Of her heart. Glaringly

I had lost it somehow.

I would never get it

Back again. And I bow

To the truth of the hit.

It is done, over now.

In darkness now I sit.
