I cried that day, as you passed away
In my arms, where you did lay
The warmth of your body, on those long cold nights
The feel of your love, as we cuddled up tight

You were my love, my hope, always there for me
And I was there for you when you'd want me to be
That sadness in your eyes, as you close them tight
I whisper to you, your final goodnight

Hugs, words, nothing will ease this pain
My love for you shall forever remain
As I hug you goodbye, those tears I cried
As I spend those final moments, at your side.

From what I can recall, this was a poem I wrote many, many years ago for someone I occasionally spoke to online on another site, who informed me that her labrador dog (I believe), her closest friend for so many years of her young life, had sadly passed away. It inspired me to write this and send it to them the next day, which they loved and thanked me for my kindness. Not sure what happened to this person, but thought I'd share this poem on here with others. I think it's one of my most heart-wrenching poems I've ever wrote to date, and still brings a lump to my throat when I read it myself.  It originally was named after her pet, but I've given a new title for here.
