The Broken Tiara

Every little girl wants to be a princess,
Whether her prince charges in
On a shining white battle horse,
Or she wields her own sword
Against the monsters who threaten her kingdom.

Each little girl dreams of a pretty,
Sweeping dress in which she climbs
To the top of her enchanted tower,
And awaits her prince's
Happy first kiss.

And each little girl dreams of her battle dress,
Girding herself with leather and armour,
In which she will face down
The fearsome foe
Before she and her love,
Whether prince or queen, banish them
To the darkness.

Each little girl has, in some shape or form,
Her very own tiara.
For some, it has rhinestones, or sequins or glitter;
For others, it's daisies, or roses and ivy;
For some it's a baseball cap, or small satin ribbon;
For others, it's suds from the bathwater at night.

But every little girl has a dream
Which she holds dear.
Every girl is a princess at heart.
A true princess shares
All her dreams and her fears,
And whether her dream becomes reality or not,
She cherishes the hope in her heart.

For some little girls,
Their crown has been stolen,
And for some, they can never regain it.
For others, they are crowned
On each passing day,
And still others, just once in a lifetime.

And for some little girls,
When they pass their tiara,
And share their dream with somebody special,
Their somebody special
Tramples it into the ground,
And leave them with bent, crushed metal.

And this little girl,
With the broken tiara,
Now grown up and still dreaming dreams,
Will continue to wear
The broken tiara,
And pretend all is well
As she waits in her tower
For her true prince to remember she's waiting.
