Thank you, Sara. I think I get it now. We have stew and dumplings here which, although complete different items, appear to be similar in principal. I am thinking that 'hardtack' from which your Biscuits are derived would be your equivalent to, but not the same as, our Military Ration oat biscuits which could be eaten dry or mixed with hot milk to form a kind of porridge.

More Coffee, please. hello2 icon_smile

By biscuits, they mean this:

https://upload.storiesspace.com/637688369-EJyZQhz5QhWmHLR3Mkkv_22222.jpg

And the gravy is sausage gravy, which is lighter in colour and has its own rather distinct flavour. Biscuits and gravy is one of the those things that I inevitably make a beeline for when I'm South of the border. Mercifully for my circulatory system, it is fairly rare up here.

Biscuits and gravy don't exist this side of the pond, so far as I know. The picture you show looks like a scone to me but that would be even worse! Is it some kind of pastry... or dumpling, perhaps?

I'll just sit here with a strong black crema and scratch my head a little... dontknow

Morning Inspired Stories Spacers. Got hot water and coffee waiting for anyone who comes dragging in. Rumors of biscuits and gravy being served, sooner or later, are being investigated.

My 'Listening in the Rain' story has defied logic and good taste to receive a tenth vote! :) Many thanks to all who voted. This means there are now two entries on the SS 'Story Picks' list. Remember, vote early and, if you can figure out how, vote often on all SS stories.

Morning, y'all and happy Hump Day.

If you haven't done so already, get thee to the story list and check out Anna's 'challenge' entry, 'Rembrance'. Me, I got a question. Is that spelling 'rembrance' vs 'remembrance' an example of UK vs US spelling -- or what? Confused minds wanna know.

What is your thought on this (Scott + Anna) A remake of the 1939 classic Drums Along the Mohawk?

What is your thought on this (Scott + Anna) A remake of the 1939 classic Drums Along the Mohawk?

Not familiar with that one. The IMDB description mentions "menaced by Indians and Tories" so I worry about how to be more culturally sensitive in the handling of indigenous people and the British instead of making them the "menace". Something less black and white.

I'm not familiar with it either but there has never been anything more menacing to the stability of the UK that this particular bunch of Tories! Lfunny

Mind you, in all fairness, none of the others are any better. Think Anxious

Topic Another excellent chapter series.

I have just had the pleasure of reading the fourth chapter of a most excellent series by Redwriter entitled 'Wishing for home' .
Set during the early days of World War Two, young Danny Rogan is evacuated to the country from his home in the city.
It is a wonderful tale of angst and woe from a young boy who is treated as a servant.. indeed, a slave, by the very couple who to whom he was entrusted for protection.
This tale is not getting enough interest and I highly recommend it.
It is very well written and an intriguing story.

Topic Remembrance Day Challenge
Posted 04 Nov 2019 08:17

A few weeks ago, I submitted a story for an online magazine which had asked for stories up to 1000 words for their November edition. I submitted the story I have just posted here, Remembrance.
They used two editors' opinions to decide whether a story would be acceptable to publish or not.
The first agreed that it was but the second rejected it with the question, 'Why had I submitted for the November edition?' amongst other things. When I explained that he obviously hadn't understood the point of the story, another editor looked at it and rejected it for the same reasons.
So, here it is.
I am somewhat bemused that they didn't see the connection or understand the point of the tale but maybe that is just me.
I would be grateful for feedback to help me understand their points either here or as a comment.

Just so you know sometimes posting a URL does not quite work. I am posting Bill's story link for him again right here.

He's right to be proud of it.

Agreed, Larry It is an excellent piece.

So, Let's sit and enjoy a steaming hot coffee on me and mull over the new challenge.

"Challenge? What challenge?" I hear you say.

I posted a new one which you can all have a go at. It has no word limitation so none of you have an excuse to ignore it.

Well? Go on then. Check it out! kekekegay hello2

Topic Remembrance Day Challenge
Posted 31 Oct 2019 15:08

The Eleventh hour of the Eleventh day of the Eleventh month. Just Eleven days away.
How about we 'Remember them' by writing a poem, story, anything, but post it before the eleventh day?

The only stipulation is that it should not be a fictional war story as such, i.e. The Nurses series. It should be written in honour of those who have served and fallen in any conflict.
It may be fiction or fact, long or short. It may include memories of war such as flashbacks or stories told to others but NOT just a war story

So, the rules:

1) Prefix title with Remembrance Challenge
2) No minimum or maximum word count but the normal rules regarding Micros or Flash Fiction still apply.
3) Suitable for all ages from a minimum 13+ meaning no obscene language, no gratuitous violence, no sex.
4) It must not have been published previously, here or anywhere else.
5) Is subject to all normal site rules not covered by the above.

So, what do you think? Shall we give it a go?

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."
Robert Laurence Binyon (1869-1943), 21 September 1914.

EDIT: Don't worry if you miss the deadline. It's still worth a try. thumbup
