I Found Myself Atop the Ferris Wheel

Sometimes you just need to change your viewpoint...

I hope you enjoy my first story on this site.

Imagine my surprise when my oldest friend, Ben, takes me to the carnival – two forty-year-olds at the carnival!

“First stop – fresh-squeezed lemonade and a funnel cake!” he exclaims, leading me to the food truck.

Handing me my lemonade, he says, “MaryLou, when life hands you lemons, make lemonade.”

“Well, I say, ‘When life hands you lemons, squirt someone in the eyeball with them.”

We both laugh as I pretend to squirt him.

“That looks good on you.”

“What looks good on me?”

“Laughter.”

“It feels good too, Ben.”

I take a bite of my funnel cake and moan with pleasure. It’s been too long since I savored its sweetness. It’s been too long for a lot of things.

I notice him staring at my nose smirking. “What?”

“It’s just … well … you have powdered sugar on your nose,” he says chucking. “It looks so cute I don’t want to wipe it off.”

I swipe at my nose. “You haven’t changed, you know that? It always feels like old times with you. For a moment I almost forgot."

"MaryLou, I'm sorry he betrayed you, but, you have to move on. Look around at what you're missing."

I take a deep breath and turn my attention to the sensory wonderland around me. Kids are screaming while whirled and twirled. Yummy pink cotton candy is stuffed into mouths. Bright colors like red, blue, and yellow perk up my previously grey skies.

Then, I see it. Pointing to a stuffed turtle hanging inside a game stand, I squeal, “Slowpoke!”

“What the heck is a 'Slowpoke’?” he asks bewildered.

“When I was a little girl, I had a favorite stuffed turtle named Slowpoke.”

“Then, you shall have it!”

“No, Ben, you can’t win those things. They are rigged.”

“Oh, she with little faith. I still have my baseball arm, you know. It will be easy to knock over those bottles,” he brags over his shoulder as he tugs me toward the game.

Well, it is twenty minutes and twenty dollars later, but I have “Slowpoke”. And Ben has a sore arm.

His guiding hand leads me all day, ending at the Ferris wheel. My sleeping spirit awakens along the way.

As we sit in our bucket atop the wheel, he says, “Open your eyes. See this big world waiting for you.”

“I want to be in it now,” I whisper, looking into his blue eyes. Funny, I just noticed they are blue.

The next thing I know his lips are on mine. Oh my goodness, what a wonderful kiss!

“I have wanted to do that since high school,” he whispers.

“You have?” I whisper back in disbelief.

“Surely you knew.”

“I think history shows I’m not quick to catching onto things,” I giggle.

“This is good. You’re laughing about it now … another step for you.”

I look at Ben and the world with fresh eyes. I no longer feel lost, but find myself again. I just needed a change in view.
