Last Rites

“You don’t have to do this, you know. In fact, you shouldn’t be doing it.”

“Yes, I know, but it’s all right, I’m going to do it.”

“I really don’t think you should, and would prefer you didn’t.”

“I’m still going to do it, it’s the least I can do for you. You shouldered me as a burden often enough, in the past.”

“That was different, you weren’t old enough or big enough, and needed to be carried at times. No matter what you think or say, I’m still the senior member of this family, and I say you shouldn’t be doing it - there are others who can do it, and take the strain of me.”

“With all due respect, those times are long gone, and I had to have been a strain on you then. Senior member of this family or not, I’ll be doing it, and if strain there be, it's of no consequence. You seem to forget I’m bigger and stronger now than then, when you could still lift me. Doing it is as much for me as it is for you.

"Be quiet now, there are no more decisions for you to make. And don’t give me that look, I’m not intimidated and won’t be cowed. Shut your eyes, the others are coming, and it’s time to go.”

In loving memory of Mary Elizabeth, September 1919 to July 2016
