Tule reeds covered marshy backwaters. They searched for science project specimens. The Colorado River was chilly, but spring sun warmed these waters. They waded waist deep in jeans. Denim dries quickly.

Tom's fair skin was pale after the desert winter spell. Booker's deep brown skin glistened where droplets had fallen. Soon they donned their white t-shirts, sneakers, and got to Tom's house.

"I'm sick of hearing that damned race music! Play some Hank Williams." Tom's father disliked Johnny Mathis.

Tom and Booker didn't go inside. Booker's house was down the street. It was quieter there. They shrugged at each other.
