Curve Balls

They keep on coming…

It’s only pain. It’s not permanent, not life threatening, just darned inconvenient. Nature’s telling me, in no uncertain terms, that two kids, two jobs and a household to run have become too much. I need to ease up. I’m not as young as I used to be and I’m not as resilient.

Life’s turned into a balancing act that’s easily upset: a little over-time here, an extra car journey there. It doesn’t take much to tip the scales then, bam! Something gives…my back, on this occasion.

Forced bed-rest isn’t the ideal way to slow the pace, but it’s certainly effective. I dropped every ball I was juggling, right there and then. Some, I tossed to family who snatched them up, adding them to their own hectic lives. A temporary solution. They won’t stay in the air forever and I wouldn’t ask it either.

I have to get better. It really is only pain. I’m not ill, just injured. I pushed through it at first and got on with life, but I ached at the slightest movement and had to admit defeat. Bed-ridden, I’ve come to accept that a full recovery’s going to take time. A long time. And even when I’m back on my feet, I’ll need to re-think my lifestyle. Failure to do so will trigger the cycle all over again. That is not happening.

So it’s time for a new chapter, a different outlook. Overtime at work? No. I can’t. Money be damned, there’s more to life. Household chores, the daily grind? Time to ask for help. My motto for living has always been, “if you want a job doing, do it yourself.” I can’t live like that anymore. It’s time for an adjustment.

Life throws curve balls. It’s what makes it a challenge and reminds us to appreciate what we’ve got. The trick is to learn from them. I will, this time.
