Across The Miles

200 words 200 words
Across the miles and hours and minutes
Rests the embrace that holds my heart.
So dear our ramblings;
So happy our silliness;
So close I hold my friend to me.

Little glimpses of our faces,
Sliding thoughts and running dreams
Traverse the earth in gentle companionship.

No hope of holding the other's hand,
Or sharing a bag of cookies.
No cuddles, no swift kiss "Hello",
No shifting of impatient feet
As we wonder why the other is late.

Only the twitch of fingers on the keyboard
And the dawning of a grin as the black box
Pings our names and smiles.

Dreams shared, experiences cherished
And prodded, and lost in the ether.
None can take this tenuous friendship,
More solid than real life,
More fleeting than fact,
More concrete than the palaces of old.

For all that holds us close together,
Across the miles and hours and minutes,
Is a single strand of gold
From one heart to the other.

And here we sit,
Making a little time for the other
Amidst the scribblings, other messages,
Other people, other things,
With real life encroaching.

And still...

Across the miles and hours and minutes
Rests the embrace that holds my heart.
