Culinary Catastrophe

I made a cake.
I figured what could it possibly take?
But as soon as I started to bake,
I knew it was a big mistake.

For my grandson, it was supposed to be.
Maybe an hour or two. Or three.
Thirteen hours later I wanted to flee.
What the hell was wrong with me?

A Star Wars cake is what he wanted.
"Sure," I said as if undaunted.
And now I will be forever haunted.
By talents perceived that I so easily flaunted.

For his 5th birthday, he wanted something unique.
OMG, I was up a creek.
When I saw the design I wanted to shriek.
I felt nauseous and squishy and ever so weak.

Instructions said you do it this way.
A wonderful cake for a boy's birthday.
So easy to do and plenty of time to play.
But the devil was in what they didn't bother to say,

So me and my sidekick, our teeth we did grit.
Tackled the task, we did not quit.
And once we were done, we had to admit.
A Star Wars cake proud and tall. "Nailed it."
