What is this?

What ails me?
What virulent virus grasps me
in it’s venomous jaws?
What is this thing that chokes me,
leaving me gasping
as life-giving air
is squeezed from my lungs?

Breathless, I wonder;
what manner of toxic substance
has invaded my veins,
scolding me, scorching
from the inside out?

My trembling hands flutter
like the tiny hummingbird,
Conflicting emotions
mimicking its dart and dive,
weaving this way and that,
plunging forwards,

I want,
I need...
I'm scared.

Fever rampages,
Ripping through fragile flesh
to attack my very core.

And what of the cure?
A remedy to ease
this savage surge
of heartfelt desire,
this raging torrent of
asphyxiating lust?

It’s you.
It’s always been you;
both cause and antidote.

I didn’t know you could infect me,
never dreamed I’d love the disease.

One kiss
and my temperature soared.
the lightest caress,
gentle as the glance
of butterfly wings;
gossamer light
with power enough
to ignite my fearsome fervor.

My burning affliction
is love:
heartfelt, pure, consuming.
The warmth pervading every
corner of my being,
delicious heat melting
my icy core,
flooding me with joy.

And I don’t want to be cured.
