Somewhere in Between

Somewhere in between,
the useless child I was defined to be,
and the man I hope to someday become,
lies a path I can barely see or understand

Somewhere in between,
the liberation and joy at being told "I love you,"
and the emptiness as another love turns to disdain,
lies the key to a cycle I cannot break

Somewhere in between,
the voices of friendship and compassion,
and those voices turning to condemnations,
lies a heart that cannot bring itself to hate

Somewhere in between,
a desire to be there and give all the love I have,
and all the forgotten times I did all that I could,
lies the fear that I cannot be loved

Somewhere in between,
the judgements of those who do not judge,
and the openness by those who shut you out,
lies what I hope can still be somehow true

But in an all or nothing world,
where you are defined by only your faults,
and you cannot be this because you were that,
what room is there for "something in between?"
