When my son was born everything was all right;
As he grew the doctors said it was slight.

I was so sad and started to read;
I cried every night, wondering if he would succeed.

It was determined that my child was on the Autism Spectrum;
All these fits and behaviors are just his tantrums.

As sad as I was there was finally a name;
All the thoughts of guilt and all of this shame.

The day came I had to put my three year old on a school bus;
He did not speak a word but I had to adjust.

At the end of the day the teacher said he did fine;
He loved his new school and I was just on cloud nine.

Everyday is a challenge but my child is amazing;
He learns in his own way and there is lots of praising.

My son's biggest challenges are just social ones;
Kids are not nice and sometimes they shun.

But he is lucky and has a wonderful friend;
Who listens and is patient and does not pretend.

My son is amazing if you give him a chance;
Get to know him and don't decide on first glance.

He is very smart and remembers facts and dates;
The information he knows is hard to translate.

My child has learned to try to fit in;
I am so proud of him and know he was never my sin.

I am thankful each day for this wonderful sweet child;
If this is Autism it is very mild.

I am thankful for my son he is an amazing blessing;
He has made lots of progress there is no more regressing.

If you can do me a favor, and remember don't judge;
Try to be nice and do not hold a grudge.

Everybody is not perfect, but everybody needs to fit in;
Everybody needs to feel acceptance and feel like they win.

Thank you for reading this poem about Autism;
Hopefully you learned that children are awesome.
