Just sixteen, her birthday had,

Her friends all gathered around.

Gifts she got from mom and dad,

Were most special to be found.

A ring, a pearl, and her first car,

Then friends gave her even more.

Prom queen and cheerleader she was a star,

What else could she possibly ask for?

In school the cliques kept others apart,

The haves and have-nots were seen.

She knew it was wrong and pained her heart,

Bur that’s the way it has always been.

That day in school her birthday just,

She gathered with her friends.

He was scared but he knew he must,

Brave their wrath and pray it ends.

She laughed and flipped her head of hair,

As he walked to her in a daze.

They all looked, how did he dare?

Intrude on them against their ways.

Just a boy from the poor side of town,

His clothes were tattered and patched,

They laughed and teased and put him down,

He was clearly over-matched.

Yet she smiled at him as he stood there,

And didn’t try to make him feel bad.

In her hand it laid and all she could do was stare,

His favorite marble he gave, it was all that he had.

Her eyes teared and glistened,

For this gift was so great,

To her friends she had listened,

She hoped it wasn’t too late.

School soon passed and her life began,

A job, new friends, and memories past.

She fell in love and married a man,

A love so strong it would always last.

Many years went by, a life they shared,

Spent together in simple style.

Not wealthy or poor but they always fared,

They had each other all the while.

All those years they never waivered,

For he was she and she was he.

She never questioned the love he gave her,

And knew that they would always be.

As it does life will always end too soon,

She laid in bed and thought of the past.

He held her close under fullest moon,

And knew that this moment was their last.

She kissed his lips midst memories seen,

And held his hand weak and slack,

With the greatest love there ever has been,

She gave this boy his marble back.
