The Sky Is Crying

Inspired by a picture of my young daughter looking out of the window on a rainy day.

It leaves...
It rises upwards in a never ending stream
That defies even gravity
And then, suddenly, it stops.
It is so far to fall, please don't let it fall
As it hovers on the border
Of the unknown and unknowing.

It moves...
Pushed and prodded by an invisible force
Surrounded by its own kind and shoved along
Slowly it moves
Guided by the whim of the wind
And with ease it goes nowhere in particular
It just slides along, forever.

It rises...
Further and further to fall, such a long way down
It rises over the largest of the
Grey, green and white topped obstacles
That lie, menacingly, in wait
And yet an invisible force moves it onward
And upwards away from ambush.

No longer is it held within the hands of safety
Nothing is holding it now
Falling, it is falling
Through the coldest air,
Rushing past its brothers and sisters
Rushing to the ground far below.

It falls...
It sees, all around, as it falls
The green grass and trees
The earth and rock
The water in lakes and rivers
And the concrete skin of cities
And the window panes of those inside.

It smells...
Fresh and as clean as freshly cut grass
Its ripples fade on its miniature lakes
And all is explained in the blink of an eye
With unaffected simplicity, Rhiannon understands
Her words echo across the darkened room
"Daddy - The sky is crying."
