You Are Not My Valentine

Some love runs deeper

On Saint Valentine’s Day,
I will not give you a fancy card
Smothered in kisses and glitter,
Nor will I send twee, rhyming verse,
Carefully scribed on scented paper.

I won’t buy hand-made chocolates
In a heart-shaped, velvet box
Or woo you with a magnum
Of imported French Champagne.

There’ll be no breakfast in bed for you
Or candle-lit restaurant dining,
No teasingly whispered promises
Over copious glasses of wine.

Those long stemmed red roses
Will not be exchanged by us.
They’re simply part of a game
That I cannot play with you.

February the fourteenth
Is another day on the calendar
And we don’t need Saint Valentine
To nudge us closer together.

So I’m not going to lavish you
With glitzy, extravagant gifts
To say how much I love you
On that one, particular day.

You are not my valentine -
You’re so much more to me.
You’re my partner, my lover,
The confidant who offers me
A yellow rose of friendship
That I eagerly accept.

Not for us the flash romance
Of a single, cut, red rose;
Our love has roots that bind us
And grow stronger every day.
