Topic What Do You Remember As A Kid?
Posted 16 Mar 2019 04:00

I remember living in a cabin along a river. I remember snakes, crawdads, and seining a river bed with my dad. I remember chigger bites from the raspberry patch.
I remember my Dad's funeral. Closed casket due to the work accident that killed him.
I remember bluegill fishing in a small creek with my brother and sister every week for two summers.
I remember riding our bikes ten miles to our cousins' house three times a week in those same summers. My sister was five, my brother was seven, and I was nine. We stopped at the Essington Farm for water. We hand-pumped it out of the well. Mrs. Essington would come out and talk with us.
I remember swimming in a public quarry that was finally condemned for bad water. It was sold to a private party and then re-opened without any contamination problems the next year. Go figure.

I remember as a ten-year-old applying make-up on my mother's back and shoulders before her dates. We kids wanted her to marry Bill and told her. He bought us McDonald's hamburgers and took us to the drive-in with Mom. She told him she wouldn't marry him.
She married Bob. It was a mistake. Our wonderful, bucolic childhood was over.
I remember a lot about that, too.

Sometimes our work place is amusing. Read from the bottom as usual with email strings. The VP/COO has a dry sense of humor that causes everyone to drink at times. This is one of them.

I am not sure that it matters given these circumstances; however, in a Danarchy , the Dan gets whatever he wants and everyone else scrounges through whatever is left over. The beauty of the system is that pretty much everybody is equal except the Dan and he is so revered that, not only are people content, they want to give him more.

American GIs discovered pizza during World War II and brought it back to the US.
This means that if you want pizza, you are pretty much supporting the spread of fascism. And if you want the company to provide you with free fascism, well, I just have to think about that….
Perhaps it would be better if we all supported Danarchy instead, yes?

Hello,
We had a huuuge (insert Trump voice) week last week with 622 dispatches. So, we will be having a pizza party on Thursday. Please let me know if there’s any special requests.

Pizza will be from bowling alley unless someone nominates a different option and that option is seconded.

Thanks,

Hot tea, Cinnamon Orange, please. For those of you with bad winter weather like me:

Cold wind and lonely hills,
Ice crystals sparkle in bare trees,
Stinging nettles pelt my face,
Giving me winter’s wheeze.

Cold sun and grayish clouds,
Wind sounds gargling without tune,
Crackling ice upon the trees,
I hear Winter’s ‘Good Afternoon’.

Coffee, please. The roads are iced. Sand truck slid sideways down a hill. Slipped into a ditch and turned over on its side like a dinosaur. Driver okay. Truck is being looked at. Sixty miles of road to sand, two sides of road makes that 120 miles with one truck. It is going to be a long day for that driver.

Coffee, please.

They re-opened Wisconsin this morning,
Or so I've been told,
Apparently -30 degrees isn't so very cold!
It doesn't seem to matter if its F or C
Frigid weather is all together way too much for me!

No matter what, we are keeping the three kayaks, the three bicycles, the two cars, her four dozen collector dolls and my twenty-four chess sets. That pasta maker gift from 1999? Bye, Bye. Oh, and we have to keep the hundred different Charles Wysocki jigsaw puzzles. No matter what we are keeping our treasures!

It was a long day but I finally finished cleaning out my parent's attic, sheds, and utility room.

I'm too old to be carrying things down three flights of steps.

Cheers!

I want to spare my children that experience and haven't figured that out yet. I've thrown out most things purchased in my twenties and thirties. I'm less successful with "stuff" from my forties and fifties. Am open to anyone's wise advice on this.

More tea and honey, please. Is there a small piece of lemon cake around?

Snow blowing the driveway; four inches this morning. COLD and miserable. (Me. Not the weather. The weather is horrible.) Still need hot black tea with 3 Ricola lozenges and two spoonfuls of honey. Cough, cough, cough, cough. Sneeze! Oops, sorry about that. Don't stand too close! Looks like the high temps this week are in the negative numbers.~How thrilling~

Throw a log on the fire and some extra grounds in the pot. The temp FEELS LIKE -12 F right now. That's -24 C at the moment. Tomorrow morning it will FEEL LIKE -25 F (-31 C). Time to snuggle for a couple of days. Irish coffee, please.

Best of luck. My employer is ISO certified (9002 or something like that) so we have regular audits. However, our last audit they didn't bother with IT so I was off the hook.glasses8

"I'm late, I'm late for a very important date.
No time to say hello, good-bye,I'm late, I'm late,I'm late
I'm late and when I wave, I lose the time I save.
My fuzzy ears and whiskers took me too much time to shave.
I run and then I hop, hop, hop, I wish that I could fly.
There's danger if I dare to stop and here's a reason why:
I'm over-due, I'm in a rabbit stew. Can't even say good-bye,
Hello, I'm late, I'm late, I'm late."

Sorry for being tardy, Happy Birthday, Larry!

Take care of yourself and get well soon, Wordpusher. I've dodged the bullet so far this winter but I'm sure I'll come down with something sooner or later. My wife was ill back in October but I didn't seem to catch it.

Thanks for the kind thoughts today. I'm at work; slogging through a couple hundred emails and sniffling so as to be let alone. Best wishes for the weekend.

Really, really, hot black tea, double-bagger, please. Large cup. Add two Ricola cough drops into bottom and two tablespoons of honey. Feeling low with a stuffy head and raw throat. I have the best velvet, low tone, raspy voice for singing Barry White songs but can't make it through a whole song without cracking. The best thing about an email society is that I can work all day without speaking to anyone. Make that To Go, please. Thank you.

Topic Does anybody care?
Posted 07 Jan 2019 14:31

Philosopher Bob Dylan says:
People are crazy and times are strange
I'm locked in tight, I'm out of range
I used to care, but things have changed.

In 4G warfare, the fight is precisely over what you care about. If you are not familiar with why our President tweets cr@p and why the two political parties do what they do...then go read about 4G warfare.

If you care less today, the enemy is winning. To win, you must care more. Do not give up the fight over self-reliance, over meaningful work, over compassion, over individualism, and over universal and absolute truths. Hold people to meaningful standards, traditional respect, integrity, and authenticity.

I care. You should, too. The fight is worth it.

Coffee, please. I plan on staring into it for a while and ruminating on my life. If I don't speak, it's because I'm lost in thought. I know where I've been and I know where I am. It's where I'm going that befuddles me at the moment.

Topic What is the Premium length of a story?
Posted 03 Jan 2019 02:51

In business, there's a parable about three people having lunch. The first person says the most important language to know is English and that one must speak English if one is to succeed in business around the world. The second person says German, French, Italian, Spanish, and English are the most important languages to speak as they are the languages of the most populous countries in the world. He proudly proclaimed that he spoke all of them. The third person sipped his soup silently and simply nodded his head. As the silence became unbearable, he set his spoon down and looked at his fellow businessmen who were waiting for his opinion. He said clearly, "The most important language to speak is the one my customer uses."

Who do we write for? The arc of the story and the targeted reader appear to determine the appropriate length of a story. But then there are times I wonder what it might be like to just string several microfiction pieces together. Sort of a Mama Mia musical via microfiction pieces strung throughout a story line. I don't have the discipline to do it myself but there are craftsmen here who could.

Please know that sometimes my confidence exceeds my intelligence. If that happened here, I apologize.

In this same vein, I have opted for the setting which disallows scoring without comments and yet I have some stories with a higher vote count than comments. How is this possible?

I made an assumption that moderators and management could read without commenting or scoring. Is that not true?

Topic Let's Do the Time Warp Again - Writing Challenge
Posted 18 Nov 2018 12:21

I enjoy contests. Something is missing without a struggle, without a score, without a goal, without an objective, without a definition of achievement and definitely without an award or reward or recognition. I intend to write a timely piece (roll eyes here, please) before the end of the month. I'd like it if recognition is attached to a challenge in the future (or the past or the present), anywhen would be nice.

Good morning, all

My fav tea is Market Spice Cinnamon Orange Tea.

Killer thick tea in foil pouch. If left too long while exposed to air, the oil causes it to fuse together into a mass. The aroma makes you salivate. It's as thick as brewed coffee. It has a caffeine rush.

This is not your mother's tea.

This tea is not intended for gentle people. It makes them ungentle.

Yes, it comes in pouch but that is simply a protective measure lest it fall on something and melt its way to the center of the earth.
