50 word stories are one type of micro-fiction. Other forms include twitter message lengths (140 character). I think micro-fiction usually includes anything up to and including 150 words.

I like 50 word stories because they were my first introduction to micro-fiction through http://fiftywordstories.com/

Unlike poetry, micro fiction is a small dose of prose. The aim is to tell a story, with a beginning, a middle and an end in the exact number of words. Not "less than" 50 words, but exactly 50 words. It forces you to consider every word and look for ways to say the most in the least number of words.

There by a bush on the dimly lit pavement, a dark brown shape. Slender and smooth, it glistens.

As I creep closer the size becomes clear; as long as my foot and fat like a sausage.

The most enormous slug in the world! Then revealed as an elderly, squishy banana.

I see her every day busy as usual. Always attentive to an opening.

My intentions and confessions left in the dust. So graceful as she turns, smiles and says "have a nice day."

The lift finally stalls. Anxiety ridden, I simply say hello. "Hi, my name is Sandra, and you?"
