The olives and the ochres of withered blades,

Of conkers and hazel all through the glade

Dark evenings, too soon the clock going back,

Squirrels secreting their nutty snacks

A ring of fairies dancing on the lawn,

Appearing in the early dawn

The cool breeze brings a dash of rain,

Like tears on the window pane

A double rainbow a lucky sign?

Still no evading autumn time

Some might speak of the fall,

Time to don coat and shawl

No more the barmy days of yore,

Acorns adorn the forest floor

'Tis the season of fog and dew

The Holly, Juniper and the Yew

The last few bees on heather recede,

But bring forth the sweetest mead

Time to pick the Bramley and the Russet,

Sweetmeats of the autumn buffet

Sprites are dancing upon the hedge,

Leaving footprints on my window ledge

No time to catch the hazy sun,

That won't get the harvest done

Look!  See there, migrating Swallows,

If I had wings... I would truly follow.
