What if...

Tags: love, loss

What if you hadn’t been there, if we hadn’t met that day,

what if when I’d looked at you, you’d looked the other way?

What if I had been older, would you have found a way to stay,

what if we hadn’t parted, each going our separate way?

Would our lives have been different,

would we have made it last?

Would we have stayed together or remained in each other’s past?

What if we hadn’t met again, years later, quite by chance?

What if the spark lying dormant hadn’t again began to dance?

But the future never was ours,

it wasn’t our destiny

to spend our lives together, happy and carefree.

Instead, it played a nasty trick and took you far away

You left a life within me, but neither could he stay.

Years later I now sit here, reflecting on what has passed

thinking about the twists and turns and how life goes by so fast.

Those memories are precious, but I keep them tucked away

My life now filled by the living whom I’m so grateful for each day.

No more what ifs, the past’s the past, the future lies in wait

To live and to love and to cherish those whose lives I celebrate.
