I am ruminating while I chew on the word of the day "cud" which basically defines ruminants.

My word for the day is "celebration." I now celebrate having quit smoking (after 32 years) in 1999. Cold turkey, and smoke free since then. It surely can be done.

My word of the day is "possibilities" because there are possibilities in every moment and this feels like a day of many possibilities, including making progress with the smoking cessation.

Indolent, folowed by inept. The origin of both words puzzled me, since the prefix 'in' means the definition of the stem is its opposite, but 'ept' and 'dolent' are not used in English. The dictionary cleared up the questions however.

Origin of INDOLENT

Late Latin indolent-, indolens insensitive to pain, from Latin in- + dolent-, dolens, present participle of dolēre to feel pain
First Known Use: 1663

Origin of INEPT

Middle French inepte, from Latin ineptus, from in- + aptus apt
First Known Use: 1542

Today's word is 'inconsistent' because that is how I feel. My writing isn't going very well because I've been writing in fits and starts and I feel a bit wandered because I'm going, rather inconsistently, between being able to breathe okay and hardly being able to breathe well enough. So, yeah, inconsistent.

Stalwart, meaning:

stal·wart
[stawl-wert]
adjective
1.
strongly and stoutly built; sturdy and robust.
2.
strong and brave; valiant: a stalwart knight.
3.
firm, steadfast, or uncompromising: a stalwart supporter of the U.N.
noun
4.
a physically stalwart person.
5.
a steadfast or uncompromising partisan: They counted on the party stalwarts for support in the off-year campaigns.

Why?

I don't know, it's a word that has been on my mind, that's all.

Mine is 'mew' because for some reason I feel like mewing like the wee Kitty I am. *Mew*

Also, good word, Gypsy. It's not exactly a word that people get to use very often.

Quote by Rumple_deWriter
While others may be, perspicacious, I'm more,

persnickety

--note: for an alternate, obscure, word, check the synonym--

Adjective

1 placing too much emphasis on trivial or minor details; fussy.

Synonyms
pernickety

Some time ago, in a writers and editors group on Facebook, one of the members posted a question about word usage that she had come across while editing and then added that perhaps she was being too 'pernickety' about the matter. Of course her question fell by the wayside while a debate raged about persnickety vs. pernickety. I sat back and watched with amusement. The person making the original post was British and used the chiefly British 'pernickety,' whereas most of those being persnickety about it were American.

Ah, ya gotta love word geeks...

EFULGENT adj. Glowing brightly, light, shining. She looked effulgent descending the staircase in white lace.
Very doubtful I'd ever use this word...sounds like it belongs in 'ripped bodice' stories. But, imo, it's one of those rare words that sounds like its meaning.

Hibernate and Estivate.

I had a discussion with a friend and she pointed out that there is no one word that effectively describes the act of leaving the state of hibernation. Awaken from hibernation is correct of course, but awaken applies to just sleeping, as well. Dehibernate would be acceptable, I think, but sounds clunky. Hibernate needs no further explanation, but to describe leaving that state isn't quite as easy to say with an economy of words.

And estivate is a lovely word, too.

This is kind of cheating, because it's about errors and serendipity.
I hate typos, tho' they do happen. I try to root out the hasty swaps of possessives, plurals, homonyms and contractions: they're-their-there, sight-site-cite, and so on. When they're mine, I cuss. Another's make me stumble, reading. Count me among the pernickety.
But I have a favourite, on-line typo: FIENDS, as in "to all my dear FIENDS" or "thank you for the FIEND request, but I'm busy now."
Second favourite, seen on a chart, "Patient returns today . . . has run the GAMETE of conservative treatment options." For an ortho complaint. I love transcription errors. At least this one.
Saving my all-time time fav word for later . . . apparently, I don't know how to spell it

In a day or two I'm going to submit my first-ever 'Musing' piece. With luck, it will contain the following word:

compasmentis

...that's assuming it still applies to me. ;)

note to Maggie: Aw shucks, Ms Maggie, those folks are just saying what the rest of us have known all along...no, really...I'm being VERY serious...honest. RdW

My word is quaver. It's not only a yummy snack-food-type maize snack, flavoured with cheese, but it's also known as an eighth note in musical terms. Thank goodness for multipurpose words, eh? I'm sure to hear a few quavers tonight, for I am headed to a gig.

Hum, I always thought 'quaver' was what I did before a root canal. ;)

My word for yesterday, today and the next few to come is:

APOCALYPSE

...as in, 'Updating the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse' a must read musing by me here on Stories Space. BTW, it contains my last WOTD: compasmintus.

...What do you mean that was a blatant display of story pimping. Weren't neither. 'Updating...' is a Musing piece, not a story, that may or may not strike readers as amusing. So there. smile

Okay, this one is really sappy,
but it's something that makes life worth living:
Love. I can't think of a single reason
why it shouldn't be my word of the day.
I can't even think of a reason it should be my word of the day,
but I'm making it my word of the day.
I suppose it's because I feel loved and I love to share the love.
Yes people, I'm a sappy wee thing,
so that's a good enough reason for love to be my word of the day.

^ that isn't even a poem, I just wanted to set it out that way
