Yep, this working full time again is for the birds. LOL

I should really clear all the stuff I have on my plate and work on that story that I started researching wood turning for. I ended up subscribed to five different channels that I've watched every video from, and ended up falling down a rabbit hole into sawmilling, restoration, and lock-picking from the recommended videos. It's a good thing I don't have anywhere to put the necessary equipment, because I'd probably have a lathe by now if I did. Then I'd be irritated because what little spare time I have isn't enough to write or turn some wood, instead of just writing alone.

Thank heavens we're in a civilized place where people know to clean out the crumbs before refilling the cookie jar

One last Tabletop Tale in the queue. I have 4 WIPs open in Wordperfect right now, though I'm trying to concentrate on the one for Valentine's and secondarily on my Earth Day story at this point. As slowly as I write sometimes, those are both in the danger zone of not getting completed in time yet again.

I don't know about that. I'm fairly certain that if i went in now, they'd put me on the spectrum. I actually had a psychological evaluation in either kindergarten or first grade. Ink blots and such. My mom was shocked that I remembered it — even vaguely. All I really remember are the ink blots and being at the doctor's office after dark, which was weird enough to take note of, even at that age. The doctor told them that I was probably bored. I think a lot of high-functioning people like me got "ah, he'll be fine..." or diagnosed as ADHD in the generation or two that followed.

It's only now being recognized, taken seriously, somewhat less stigmatized, and part of a 24 hour news cycle that makes it look like something that's been there all along has suddenly come out of nowhere. When the subject came up elsewhere in a writer's community, there were a half a dozen people who reported being diagnosed as on the spectrum later in life.

In some ways, it's a bad thing. I think a lot of parents with kids on my barely there end of the spectrum are going overboard with treatment, and reinforcing an already difficult time of interacting with the rest of society because they're being constantly reminded that they're "other". What they really need is slight adjustments, such as not engaging in the common good-natured teasing about crushes, understanding that grades in classes with group dynamics such as music and P.E. are probably going to suffer, etc. High functioning kids can work this stuff out with minimal extra parental support and understanding. They don't need to be psychoanalyzed, put in special classes, and the like.

But, I'll digress. Probably getting a wee bit too serious for somewhere that's meant as a relaxation space smile

Working on a story in another of my "worlds" for here. Imagine a ghost trying to scare off new people invading his space, but they have cats. His every effort is blamed on the furballs and ignored. Banging noises in the night? It's the cats. Stuff knocked off the counter? Of course it's the cats. Weird howling noises? Duh.

Dead, and still can't catch a break.

Autism is right up there with Alzheimer and Parkinson and MS and others that I sure hope all this intensive work being done with DNA might give us a breakthrough to help these people. so many cases and I don't believe in "they just identified it now - they didn't before" . I don't know the answer but have enough friends and family that have gone through the struggle with not enough help.

I'm just glad the boy got attached to Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks, and my old Transformers DVDS, rather than Barney or Teletubbies. I'd have lost my mind years ago with Barney running constantly in the background.

He's got a few odd choices as well. Fleetwood Mac's "The Dance" and the Phantom Menace being the most odd. Fleetwood Mac is at least explained by his Mom loving it and watching it frequently. No clue where Phantom Menace came from.

Overnight is too slow for me when it comes to replacing a DVD player. My son is autistic/non-verbal, and though he's only watching it about 10% of the time, one of his things is having to have a movie playing constantly. Naturally, that's hard on the player. If it stops working, he can't really comprehend why, and the ensuing frustration at the break in his routine more or less lasts until a working DVD player is once again in place. After the first time, I learned to keep a new one ready to go, and immediately replace it as soon as I have to switch out for a broken one.

Same thing for the discs, but he seems to be willing to reluctantly watch something else when one of them fails.

I'm seriously considering buying him his own computer and loading it with digital copies, since he's quite competent with navigating via a mouse. It will probably be cheaper in the long run than the physical media replacements. Tried using his Ipad in that capacity, but he wasn't interested. He will watch movies on my computer though. Still a risk that it will sit there gathering dust if I buy him one of his own. You never know with him. So, I'm still mulling it over.

I was just going to remark on that. I suspected that was the case when I saw all the avatars revive from their broken image links, and then no warning when I popped back in this time.

I actually considered doing that deliberately with one of my stories (doing two version, one for each site) but never got the one for here done.

If I had to pick a favorite story of mine out of everything I've ever written, it would be Merchant Princess. So, it was worth it. I feel like it's the best representation of my work, so I like to have it available everywhere, even if in a tweaked form.

Well, I've put in almost 20 years in that salt mine. LOL 10 years at the job before that, split between three different locations. The last week was actually on 2020's time. I always take the first week of the year off as the final hurrah of my pseudo vacation.

It's actually the easiest time of year to get days off. Everybody else has burned every bit of vacation time, sick time, personal days, and everything else by late August, so it's constantly wide open. There are always people who schedule Thanksgiving and Christmas, but rarely any of them with hours left by the time it rolls around, so I take it. Then I schedule every Saturday, horrible days like Black Friday, etc. That's the price they pay for me showing up the rest of the year.

Other than a few awful days like Black Friday, the following Sunday, and the Sunday after Christmas, the hours are always down this time of year as well. I actually make more by staying home than I would if I showed up.

I'll take another week in April, over my birthday and my late wife's. Then I take the July 4th weekend. After that is the long haul to Thanksgiving, other than a schedule change in August which gives me 5 days off in a row.

:: sigh :: Back to a regular work schedule tomorrow after burning up 160 hours of my leftover vacation time between Thanksgiving and today. I haven't worked more than 3 days a week in a month, and had two full weeks off. Not going to be a fun adjustment. It's worth it every year, but going back is sooooo painful. LOL

I was in the process of trying to post Merchant Princess on the red side, and they suggested here because the violence was a little over the top. Long story short, it was too hot for here, too violent for there. I ended up making edits for both places while hashing it out, and they both ended up getting accepted.

I've built up a rather extensive notes file of stories that I think aren't well suited for over yonder, but fit here, so I hopped back into regular visits in anticipation that I'll eventually get some of them written. In the mean time, some of the categories are intriguing me, so I'm taking a crack at those with a few things.

Anything by Steven King. I've tried several, but there's something about his writing that just makes my eyes glaze over. I never get more than a couple of chapters in before I give up.

We'll see how this next one goes. LOL

Decided to try my hand at micro fiction. Took a couple of minor characters from a much longer piece, and condensed their whole story into 90-some-odd words. For some reason, it all wanted to rhyme.

I've been having a lot of mainstream ideas float through my notes files lately, and some of them are quick little things. The rather unique category options here are proving to be a bit of an inspiration as well. So, I figured it was time to put SS back in my regular daily link-blinking rotation. A few longer fantasy stories as well, but those are probably off in the far-flung future. Too many things already on my plate already to do more than store those away in a notes file for later.

Dropping a few little funny memories from my gaming days for now, inspired by the memoirs category. Tinkering with a couple of the shorter fantasy bits. This feels like the logical place for those.

Just a wee heads up. I keep getting an expired security certificate warning every time I pop in the last few hours.
