Well, apparently I am an award-winning artist — a pair of my clay tiles received a prize at a community art show last weekend.

Yeah, I can see you making stuff out of clay Miss Rascal...

LOL that's still self-publishing, though ;-)

I agree with you that it's basically a thinly disguised form of self-publishing...but, I'm also quite convinced that the reason most small publishers are created is so that people can get themselves and their writer friends published...not that there's really anything wrong with that....

But...just sayin'

Indie publishing seems to be what I'm leaning towards, as it gives me a chance to get out there first and show my colors. I've heard several people in my college writing circle have had success with indie publishing, as did my girlfriend.

Btw, there is sort of an alternative between indie and traditional I've seen a few people attempt these days...since indie still has a bit of a "bad rep" in some circles, what some people are doing is getting together a few writers who are planning to go indie and starting their own publishing company...

Since it's really not that hard to start a publishing company these days, with the advent of Kindle Direct and CreateSpace and the like, the only real difference between indie and starting a publishing company would possibly be the creation of a website...something you'd want to consider anyway...

Something else to think about...
That's a great Pete Seeger song Louise, my fave by him btw...

I have something a bit different at the moment...Mr. Arthur Conley...and if this vid don't get you moving, you just might be dead...

If you publish normally i.e. through someone like Harlequin do they sort out those kinds of things for you?

thanks

Louise

Basically, that link I just posted refers to self-pub on Amazon, and what it tells you is if you don't have the tax ID number, which varies in difficulty to get according to country, they just withhold taxes at the highest rate...and you'll get it back when you file later...

You mentioned Harlequin, and there are a lot of romance writers in my LSF group...see my sig line, perhaps because I found out recently that LSF started as a branch of RWA some years back, but anyway, I know one writer mentioned she got an accountant and never looked back, but that has to do with the way Harlequin releases their back catalog in other countries, and how sales figures are computed...see this article...

http://jakonrath.blogspot.com/2012/05/harlequin-fail.html

In any event, your main concern should be getting published...and if at some point you really think you need to hire an accountant to keep the government from getting all your millions...well, every writer should have that problem...just saying...
Other people's stories have always been a big inspiration for me, and not necessarily "true-life" stories like you have in No. 5, other fiction stories are usually where I get my inspiration for me at least...toss in some real life experience, and I usually can come up with a story of my own...
Coming this summer on Inner Child Press...a collection of 78 poems, and 4 short stories...stay tuned to a fine story site in your area for more details...

There was a discussion in another forum about the process of writing and editing poems, and this is a perfect example, me thinks...for one thing it's probably my most well-known poem...see this thread...

My 9-11 Tribute poem has been "in print" at least fourteen times in 2011...
http://www.storiesspace.com/forum/yaf_postst538_pyLbqxrnMTIHD66m

And btw...it's already showing up on the internet this year, and I think it's a bit early...but...

Anyway, there were several poems written out on paper around this time, since my computer got stolen September 13, 2010...so, they sort of serve as good examples...

I had thought about writing a 9-11 poem after reading a forum thread on a famous red site I won't mention, but didn't come up with anything for a couple of weeks...

I was going from the Raritan, NJ Library to the Somerville Library regularly to get more computer time...I got the idea for this while walking from Raritan back to Somerville...only about a 10 minute walk, btw...and sat down in the library and wrote this out...

This is the original first draft written in the Somerville Library the afternoon of Sept. 29...

Note that I use parentheses () around words I'm not sure I want to include...and underscore words I might want to change...

Note also the line "Who walked among us standing tall" never got used...probably a good thing that...

Here's the other side...it was written on the back of a library flyer...

Here's the second draft...I think I missed a verse, and I have no idea why...don't think there's a bar in the library...at least I don't remember one...

Actually, looking at it...I think I may not have really come up with that verse until the third draft, or just not noticed it since the opening lines are written on the side in the first draft...I do remember spending the most amount of time the second day coming up with the word "embodiment"...took a number of times going from the dictionary to the thesaurus to come up with that, note the notation in the upper right corner of the first draft, as the original line was written "A source of goodness on that day" and I was most definitely not happy with that one...

And here's the final draft I wrote up before entering it in the library computer...and it got a title now...both second and third drafts were done the next day...September 30, 2010...
