A rule of thumb I use is to write the numbers out in words.
Numbers typed (1,2,3 etc) looks sloppy to me in literature unless the motivation is to include numbers throughout the piece. It kind of goes the same way of text speak on a forum. I don't think it should be used unless it is correspondence made in private or some sort of note taking exercise not meant to be presented formally.

I've recently come across a totally new obstacle for me when it comes to writing poetry.

Think of what you're writing as an event you have to describe as a spectator. Ask yourself what a person in your situation would be feeling and actually communicate to the reader the thoughts and emotions of your "character" because the majority of them may not be able to directly relate.
