Survived Wednesday and Thursday, though not unscathed. Been nursing a bugger of a headache today. Still, one workday left and then it's a long weekend here in the Great White North. The actual name for the first Monday in August varies from province to province, even within provinces. In Ontario, it is mostly known as the Civic Holiday, but some places celebrate Simcoe Day in honour of John Graves Simcoe, the British governor of Upper Canada (which became Ontario after Confederation) who had a hand in founding a lot of places in the province, including my current hometown of London.
Enough history. Need tea and cookies.
Good evening, all. Grass cut and pruned more bushes (in an attempt to spare my eyesight from poking branches). I shall have an iced tea and a couple of those peanut butter banana cookies while I wind down.
We had showers on and off all day yesterday, with some lightning in the evening while we were watching the Olympics. Got to see Canada's first medal live (silver in 4x100 freestyle relay). My city has a local girl on the team, too, who will be going for a medal in 100m butterfly tomorrow (tonight our time). Big story of this games might be the anchor of the relay team, though. Penny Oleksiak is one medal away from joining two past (and much older) athletes as Canada's top medal winner in the Olympics. They both have 6 and last night was her fifth. 21 and only in her second Games. Still won't match Clara Hughes, though, in one regard: Hughes six medals were spread across both summer and winter games, a pretty rare feat. Two cycling medals in Summer Games and 4 speed skating medals in Winter Games. And then went on to become a mental health advocate after she retired from competition.
Quiet in here at the moment, but I'll put the coffee and kettle on for those wanting their morning "fix".
Been pouring through some of the comp entries that I missed during the week. Some really good stuff here. Nicely done, SS writers.
Good morning. Nice see that elizabeth ... ponied up ... for a gift. * ducks thrown tomatoes (from Gil's garden, of course) *
So, the Olympics are on. Anyone paying attention. Saw some of the opening ceremony. There's a couple local athletes I hope to catch in action. Beyond that, not sure how much I'll bother to watch. Might be worth watching women's gymnastics just to see Biles in action again. She's pretty amazing.
Aww such cute doggies. Even that makes me feel a bit better.
And sixteen stories now. Nice.
Netflix's Russian Doll has a nicely curated soundtrack of popular music. Harry Nilsson's "Gotta Get Up" serves kind of, sort of, as the theme (but not really, it just shows up whenever the main character's time loop restarts).
Bad double post. * smacks with a rolled up newspaper *
So, fourteen barring any more last minute entries. That's only two short of last summer's Summer Word Bank comp so not bad at all. I shall endeavour to read more tonight. Busy-ness and a bout of depression kind of set me back since my initial run of reading entries. And I love the good comments I have been getting here. So much better than "like it" which is the extent of so many comment I get elsewhere.
Good morning. I visited Stonehenge just a couple years ago but there was neither Verity nor dancing happening. Must have gone on an off day.
I see a mysterious polar bear has wandered into the competition. Hope he drops by to introduce himself though he seems vaguely familiar, eh.
Coffee is on and kettle is boiling. I'm settling in for a rather quintessential Southern Ontario Summer day (high of 30C, humid, chance of evening showers).
Happy Monday!!! Coffee is a'brewin' and kettle is a'boilin'.
Comp continues to grow, with Tams adding her contribution (which will probably be the next one I read). Nice to see lots of comments, and good ones, coming in for the comp entries.
Got through three yesterday. Will try to get to some more today. Impressed as always with the SS team coming through with good takes on the theme.
So now with my story "live" I'm starting to delve into the other entries. Given the authors, I have high expectations. Started with Kat's entry and was not disappointed.
Finally read up on what happened with the Nats-Padres game. Ugh. Surprised it hasn't made any of my usual news sources or Twitter follows. Only knew it happened because of Larry and Jeff talking about it.
Love how you help out with the church kids, Sara. Bet they get as much from your stories as from the lessons.
And once mine passes moderation, we'll be at eight submitted.
My story is in the queue. Hopefully a mod gets to it soon. At least the queue here doesn't get backed up. It's a bit dark but the ending is, I think, hopeful.
Kettle is on for afternoon tea.
