Hey, Roland, nice to have you back and on the mend.

Coffee's on and kettle is boiling. I've got some new teas, including an old favorite, Sunday Tea (black tea with bourbon vanilla). Good stuff. Got some Irish Breakfast, too.

Weekend is a looking potentially grey and wet, but we shall see how things progress. It's a chance of showers rather than "rain" so we might still get some outdoor time.

These all sound excellent! I'll check them out.

FYI, Monstrum did do a piece on the Big G and Mothra around the time King of the Monsters came out. Should be somewhere on the Storied channel.
Hey, welcome Rachel and Harley. Nice to have you. Pop by the Inspirations thread. It's where the cool kids like me and Survivor hang out. And there's cookies!
Congratulations, Rump! Sounds like you are becoming the root of a good-size family tree.

Lovely weather here, heading into summer-y conditions tomorrow. We have a long weekend looming (Victoria Day, because the queen of that name is important in our history) but with restrictions still in place, it won't be quite as wild and wooly as it sometimes is. Traditionally, it is the start of summer vacation season in Ontario and a lot of campgrounds, amusement parks, and such start opening. This year, as last, current rules will keep a lot of them closed until the current stay-at-home order is lifted, probably in a couple weeks.

MechaG and Big G cookies with an iced green tea.
Did some catch-up of favorite PBS Digital Studios shows on Youtube.

Eons (which discusses deep time and evolution) covered the evolution of wood, which then allowed trees as we know them to evolve.

Sound Field (which looks at various topics in music) did a nice piece on Beethven's Fur Elise, which also marked the return of co-host Nahre Sol who's been away most of the past few months

It's Lit (like Sound Field but for literature) did a history of manga, the Japanese comics that inspire a lot of anime and have become popular and influential in the West over the past 3 or so decades

FYI, if you're looking for them, Eons and Sound Field have their own Youtube channels, It's Lit is one of three shows sharing a channel called Storied. It's stablemates are Monstrum (about monsters in folklore and literature, which I've talked about in other places on the site) and Other Words (about language and the origins of words).
* grabs a Ghidorah and a Megalon *

Yeah, I'm going for the villain monsters today.

Lovely weather here. I've basically moved my home office out to my deck, at least in the afternoon (morning it gets too much sun). Have a patio table with a umbrella and my wi-fi router is in the room right above the deck so I get decent Internet out there. Need to get a better keyboard to use out there. The good keyboard in my office is hard to take out (it's in a tray and the cable has some complicated routing) and the spare I've been using has a stupidly designed left shift key. I have a nice MS one in the basement but it's an old style that won't plug into my laptop without an adapter.

Kettle is on and I am making a sencha (Japanese green tea). Anyone else for tea or other non-coffee beverages?
Somehow did not find this one until today. It's not Lake Street Dive's first appearance on Tiny Desk Concerts and their previous one was one of the performances that got me into the band in the first place. The songs are all from their latest album "Obviously".

This is one of the last appearances by Mike "McDuck" Olson, the band's co-founder, guitarist, and trumpeter, who announced recently that he is leaving the band to pursue other projects. He is scheduled to appear with the band in some gigs in May and June and then is finished.

I'll have an Earl Grey tea to help me with the hoovering!

Is that what you call vacuuming in the UK? If so, I just finished mine. Plus washing floors. Plus getting an old stereo up from the basement to replace the one in the kitchen (works fine for radio and CD but the cassette deck kind of sucked and Mrs. M wanted to listen to some old cassettes).

So I'll have an iced tea to recuperate, I think. And a Godzilla or two.
Kong won. This other huge ape monster came along and bit off Godzilla's head. Not that Kong lasted much longer after that...

Coffee is on and kettle is boiling. And it's a weekend.

TOO COOL! I MUST HAVE THIS!

(Sorry for yelling.)

I thought you were peeing on the fence to keep them away?

* takes a Godzilla and a King Kong and starts playing with them *

hi peeps

Jeff I'll bring sugar cookies tomorrow what shapes would you like ?

Hugs to everyone!

Godzilla cookies for the win.rrNvUR6aMacddVnF I second this motion. As long as they don't breath radioactive fire. Though I suppose that could be helpful if my tea gets cold.
And a First to Eleven cover from a few months back. I had not heard the original but this got me to seek it out. I actually prefer this version.

Quote by AnnaMayZing

Whilst listening to "Wellerman" I found myself hearing a close similarity, although considerably slower, to the theme tune of a TV show I watched and enjoyed as a child.
Do you hear it too?

It is quite obvious in the chorus, eh. Per Wiki, "Wellerman" dates to the 1860s and given the proclivity of folk tunes to move freely from song to song, who knows what the relationship is? Maybe "Wellerman" used an existing tune that the writer of this song also used? Or maybe this one borrowed the tune?

One of the artists in there is Audra Miller of First to Eleven and Concrete Castles (former is a cover band, latter does original material). The latest Castles release hit last Thursday.

The whole sea shanty meme kind of passed me by. I saw the videos coming out but only listened to one or two and found it all kind of meh. But this version of "Wellerman", featuring three young female artists that I am familiar with through their regular gigs (2 are in bands, the third is solo), caught my eye. It is quite a good performance.

It doesn't get much better than that, does it? Mrs. Mendalla and I have been watching a lot of bios of composers recently (she's teaching herself piano so it's now an interest of hers) and Tchaikovsky was one of them. Have also watched Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, and Liszt.

Bit grey here for Mother's Day but Mrs. M got a gift card and greetings from our son so that brightened things up a bit.

Kettle is on for tea and I'm making a pot of Scottish Breakfast for those needing a morning fix.

We all survived our Covid vaccine! 22 hours later, and all we have are sore arms. And better wifi reception!

Getting your COVID shot improved your wifi reception?? How the *bleep* does that work? Now I am really looking forward to my second shot.

Got my stuff from HD but weather is still a bit cool for yard work. However, there's a chance of showers tomorrow so today is the best day to get it going.

And a Happy 181st Birthday to the great Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky! To celebrate, his famed Violin Concerto.

Good morning, Larry (and all who come after me)! Bit of a grey day here. Need to do a curbside at Home Depot and then I can do some yardwork when it clears and warms up (mid-afternoon according to the not very reliable Environment Canada).

For now, I'll just slump in the corner with a black tea and a couple cookies. Maybe Miss Purr will join me. A lap cat might be nice right now.
Ape here. Ape grab pawprint and a bee. Ape hunker down with tea and cookies.
Split the difference and get a fifth wheel? (RV-size trailer that mounts to the back of a pickup)

Virtual meeting or in-person?

Jeff what would covid cookies look like ? *Giggles*

Ball shaped cookies like the snowballs my mother used to make for Christmas but with little "protein spikes" sticking out?? Other than that, I got nuthin'.

Think I'll take them with me to the corner table, pull up a confy chair and ponder on what bait those scientist were using when they caught that 7 ft long, 240 lbs Lake Sturgeon in the Detroit River. ;)

Eek. My brother sometimes fishes Lake St. Clair (which is the mid-point between Lake Huron and Lake Erie, connecting the St. Clair River to the Detroit River). In a kayak. That thing is a lot bigger than him and probably bigger than his kayak. Sturgeon are amazing fish, though. And I say that as a non-fan of caviar.

Evening, folks. Had one of my headaches today but it is gone now. And my arm is just about recovered from my shot. In fact, I am in pretty decent shape right now. Just popping by before shuteye to see what's up.

Vibes and healing wishes to all who need them.
Thanks for the birthday wishes all. I celebrated in style by letting a woman stab me in the arm.pQpgfVYnhZqcPnF6

Okay, let me rephrase that ... I celebrated in style by getting my first dose of Pfizer.viLWgdkkNVKGiqgP And having takeout from my favorite Viet-Thai place for dinner (still no dining rooms here, else might have gone for all-you-can-eat sushi instead).

I'm also going pour MY OWN URINE along the fenceline, in an attempt to establish territory and keep them at bay. Talia, incredibly, approves.

Sure you're not sure just making up an excuse to explain to Talia why you peed on the fence?

We have coyotes around here but I have never seen them personally. There's warnings around the area, though. Supposed to be careful around the valley West of me and the two wooded areas in my neighbourhood around dusk and dawn.

Putting on the kettle for some herbal tea to go with my cookies. One of each droid, I think.
Just going to relax with an iced tea and some cookies. Cut the grass and did some other yard stuff. Nice weather for it. The breeze is a bit chilly but I was pushing the mower so the sweat I worked up kind of cancelled that out.
Kettle is on for tea. Lots to choose from, both bag and loose. I'm going for Scottish Breakfast myself.

Weather has been insane here. Gusty winds yesterday that actually took down a motel sign in the South end of the city. Ottawa, where my son lives, even got a late snowfall.

I am booked for my first shot of Pfizer (most likely, Moderna is possible but we aren't getting much of it in Canada) next Thursday. Things are finally picking up here on the vaccine front and Ontario aims to have booking open for all adult citizens by the May 24 (which is a holiday here) and everyone done by July 1 or so (the next holiday). Lockdown still in effect and the experts say it should stay in place until that first round of vaccinations is done but our government seems increasingly reluctant to listen to the experts (not that they have ever been very good at that).

Have a nice weekend!

(And Gil, that seafood feast sounds wonderful. We used to do a seafood "buffet" for our family New Year's Eve meal).

Writing a little today. Finishing a serious story about drug addiction that I guess is in the Urban Horror genre, then starting a goofier one about death crickets, before I go to the dentist. Wah. My evening: pain pills and baseball.

So, um, how autobiographical is that story, anyhow?

(Just teasing)

Good evening. A lemon-ginger herbal tea and some pecan divines would be ... well ... divine.

Ontario has, somewhat out of the blue, launched an incredibly aggressive update to the vaccination plan. And among other things, that means I am eligible to book a slot as of 8am tomorrow.0ADbShlB4bFQmcYM
Hey, just came up with a great new addition. I put some baseball gloves, balls, and bats out by the back door. If anyone wants to play catch out in the back or hit a few, there you go.

* sound of breaking glass *

Just watch out for the ... um ... yeah ... neighbour's windows. Um, okay, maybe we'll skip the bats.

Good evening. So-so weather day here but I was working so didn't affect me much. Our health officer tweeted today that either at risk (which include me due to health issues) or my age band will probably come up for vaccination eligibility this week so I am probably in either way.

So hopefully back to the office more regularly soon. They say Pfizer gives decent protection after two weeks and my office is pretty good about precautions (they are even supplying medical masks since we are in healthcare and have to stock them for the frontline workers anyhow).

Having a tea and a couple cookies. * scowls at monkey when she tries to snarf one I wanted *
Welcome to our little cafe, WriterGirl. Please to make yer acquaintance.

After a lovely day yesterday in which we got a ton of yardwork done, today is chilly and blustery. Spring in Ontario. Gotta love it. (Or move to BC where things are bit less variable)

I see verbal hasn't been in to help the monkey finish off the cookies so I'll just grab a couple to have with my afternoon green tea.
More from Powerless Trio. Damn, that drummer may have the best voice of the three.
