I have a stomach bug, and so am laying low, but there's a game on at 2, the Mets have been kicking the dodger's ass, and I have nothing to attend to. So I am going to lie back and watch baseball and try not to puke.

I started writing again! I took like three weeks off to take care of my daughter, but started a promising story yesterday (the garbage disposal).
Talia is off to see her Mom this week, as I stay here to take care of my daughter. Wah! I'll just have to drown my sorrows with baseball.

I’m no longer taking care of my daughter all day. She is going to try to get through mornings and early afternoons on her own, and I will pick up her kid and bring him home and hang out for a couple hours. Hope it works out. She s doing well.

I just got dropped by my neurologist, for reasons that are unclear, but probably involve clearing Medicare patients off the rolls so they can make more money. I got another one, so they won't interrupt my care. But, at least here in the US, it's clear the billionaires have taken over. Sigh.

Starting to get back to normal. I'm actually spending the morning at home, before heading over to my daughter's place in the afternoon. A complication has reared its head, but things should be fine.

Things are going pretty well with my daughter's recovery. One complication reared its head this week, but nothing we can't deal with. I'm getting used to all the animals in her house. Only three of them, but that darned bird is annoying.
About halfway through Moby Dick. It's a good book.

Here's a band we saw live last weekend: the Mavericks. The great Flaco Jimenez (who is playing in this song) was not touring with them.
Hoo boy, a day off! Watching the Mets-Yankees game (no score) and a play later (Sister Act, which I REALLY don't want to see, but Talia does, and that's what marriages are made of).
Overall, the caretaking is going a little easier than expected. Downside is, I get really tired by 6 or so, and I've been exhausted by the end of the drive home. Hoping to regain my energy this weekend.

It’s a fun read, though you have to drag your way through the occasional boring section (types of whales, anyone?). But Arab is a gas. And I just finished the part about the real life whale attacks that MD is based on. Cool
Daughter continues to improve. This will be a little easier than we thought it would be.
My goal is to be able to protest with her on June 14. Flag day. Trump’s birthday. Military parade. It’s gonna be a day.
My daughter can now stand up and sit down without assistance. That’s a big breakthrough!
While she recovers, I am reading Moby Dick. It’s an easier read than I expected. Once Arab enters the picture, it’s a fun read.
I have edited exactly 3 pages of my own novel. Not exactly tearing it up with my pace.

So my daughter's surgery went fine, though it will be a long recovery. She ran a high fever for a couple days, but it finally broke. I'm her daily care team.
Dwight Yoakam was great, though it was cold as f (outdoor venue) . He got a little outshone by the Mavericks, who were his opening band and really rocked the place.

Sorry, couldn't resist the pun. It really is raining hard here. My daughter goes into surgery tomorrow, then an overnight in the hospital, and then I am caretaking for her for the next 8 weeks, with the able help of her boyfriend. I'm a litle scared but we will all be fine in a couple months.
Also - taking Talia to see the great Dwight Yoakum in concert on Friday. Should be fun.

Finished the (very) rough first draft of a novel. Timed it perfectly. I'm taking the day off of writing, though since I have a dentist appointment at 1, it doesn't really feel like a day off.
A running joke in our house is that dental appointments are always at 2:30. Tooth hurty! Get it? Hahahahahahahah!

Another big issue with Dad last week. I’m thankful we got him moved to the 24/7 care floor in February or I don’t know what we’d do.

I sold two stories in one week last week! That's never happened before.
My daughter is going to have a major operation in about a week, and I am caretaking for a couple months as I help her out (and edit the novel in my spare time). So I might be around here less. But I'll be popping my head in!
Yeah, I agree, WG really is a really great presence on the site, and a with with heart and skill and an eye for the exact right detail.
Nothing new here. Did an Easter egg hunt in the backyard for grandson and two other kiss and 75 plastic eggs! There kicker is this: we saw our neighborhood bobcat in the back yard Easter morning. Thankfully he ate no kids. Or eggs.
I'm going to be hitting plastic eggs with the lawnmower all summer.

Woke up too early today. 6:30. I got up and called my elected officials - I do that every morning. The interns at the sole Republican's office know me by name! Or phone number, anyway.

It was a quiet weekend. We did some yard work and started working on our garden plots. The rain over the weekend did help wash some of the pollen away. I wiped my kitchen counter, and the cloth ended up green. I think everyone is sneezing.

I used to listen to news all day long while I write. Clearly I can't do that anymore. I get too upset. So I've been writing lately to the Flow soundtrack. Really peaceful and lovely. Both the animated movie and the soundtrack are wonderful.

I’m told you have to deplete your assets now before Medicaid kicks in. And here, there’s a wait for a Medicaid bed in facilities. My friend waited two years before she could get her mom in one in Lexington. It’s hard. You work you whole life, save, then a major health crisis can take it all in a short time. We’re still thinking Dad won’t outlive his money. Hoping, anyways.

Yeah, I had to fight for years to get my retirement account--401(a), not 401(k)--declared as NOT an asset. It finally worked. And then needed a State Rep's help to find a bed. Good for you for keeping your head in the fight. It's so easy to get discouraged.
Going to the dentist today. Wah. But it's a GORGEOUS day outside, and going to the dentist mean I don't have to write, so it's like having the day off.

Medicaid paid for a memory care bed for us, back in the day. Of course, those systems are being quickly dismantled. And I’m sure you’ve probably already looked into it. But it was a lifesaver for us (though we needed the help of a State Representative to make it official).

I like Paul Krugman’s Substack too. Our fave Substcker is Heather Cox Richardson, a political historian. She has videos too, twice a week, where she talks about American history, and they remind us of FDR’s fireside chats (on purpose I think).
Tough to read the headlines every morning. Again, what keeps me sane is making calls to my elected officials. I feel less hopeless. And writing my little 3 sentence speech every morning helps me focus and move on from the news.

I'm actually writing a little non-fiction about the space program right now. The Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs, focusing on the early years. And a time when our government could accomplish great things. I also want to write about the Interstate system, though I know how boring that sounds.
