Traveling the good old US of A and NOT having to worry about bed bugs.

This is why I don't like travel much now. Fear of getting bed bugs!!

They still have those around here, just not as many as there used to be...the Colonia Dairy Maid, for instance, which is in walking distance from my mom's house where I grew up, is still in business since the 50's...there used to be a Carvel right down the street, not sure if that's still there though...

Interesting...hadn't thought about the travel aspect, since I don't travel much, but I did live in a place that had them in 2010...and yeah, they're rather annoying...you wake up itching every morning, though you don't normally ever see them...I didn't anyway...which is just as well btw...

A lot of these things mentioned here are still around, you just don't see them much...one thing I miss around here is pay phones...I know most people have cell phones these days, but sometimes the battery runs out, or you can't get a signal, or something happens...and it's nice to be able to pull over and use a phone...


I once knew a drinker who had a moderating problem...

Markets so busy you struggled to walk round them

High streets that had lots and lots of interesting little shops (not the modern charity shops/estate agents/vape shops and fast-food outlets)

Cosy little cafes that sold home-cooked food

Red telephone boxes

Men wearing fedora hats (I've recently started wearing one!)

Women who made their own clothes (my mum made dresses for herself and my two sisters when we were all little kids)

Policemen on the beat in your area

Fireworks that were only heard on November 5th (in the UK)

Cars that had individuality and distinction, unlike modern 'clone cars' that all follow pretty-much the same design.

Busses that had hop-on/hop-off open platforms at the back and a conductor/conductress.

Guess what... They do in Munich!
My husband has a stick and someone always offers him a seat on the tram, train, etc.
I was amazed when it first happened but that is how they are.

yep, sure would. I chose that café because we often use it when we visit.
I am afraid I have a 'thing' for Munich and Bavaria in general.
If I could move there I certainly would.

So would I. One of the few places that still offer work that fits my experience, but it would put us out of reach of family, so alas...

Also, one of the few places that has a high level of employment, 98% in Munich, I believe... and it shows.

When I was ten and lived deep in the city. There was a coffee shop right across from my parents apartment. It was an old run down place but they had the most sweetest and fine sweets you can ever imagine. It was a bit unpopular but the place had regulars alot. Sadly over the years they shut down becuase barely anyone came to the shop. They closed when I was sixteen I believe. Oh how I wish for that place to still be there. Such a great place it was.

This reminds me of the Bakery where my Aunt used to buy her bread when she lived in London and we were children. She would say:
"Would you get me a loaf please?" and I'd trot over the busy (by late 1960's standards) road and wait patiently in line until being served with a wonderful crusty white loaf which the baker would wrap in a sheet of tissue paper. Sometimes the bread would still be warm from the oven.
Now we buy our bread from the supermarket, pre-wrapped and sliced and tasting... well, not like those wonderful crusty, fresh loaves did...

Ah yes, there is one out in the country like that. Thriving business they have but I rarely go and when I do it is like a treat. Sigh, oh such things brings nice memories to me.
