Been feeling totally drained of inspiration these past couple of days and I am starting to feel like I am never going to write again. Would just really love to know how everybody else deals with situations like this. I have a few ideas for some stories but just can't get down to writing them and when I do it is so bland and lifeless.

Btw, Vana...I don't think that lacking inspiration for a couple of days is anything to be the least bit concerned about...if it was a couple of years, well...then I'd be concerned...

I usually get inspiration from reading other people's stories...when I read someone's story, I usually think in my mind my own version of how events may have unfolded if I was in that situation...

Things people tell me that have happened to them I've based stories on...heck, I've written poems after reading someone's Facebook status that I liked...so, I pretty much get inspiration anywhere...

I think that since I started writing a couple of years ago I look at things a different way...I certainly don't read stories the same way...takes me a lot longer actually, if it's a writer I like, I find myself sort of...hate to use the word "analyzing"...I think that's a bit too strong of a term, but more like "observing" how they describe things and their writing techniques...

Any of this help? Good Luck btw...though I really don't see a problem here...

Been there, done that, wrote a poem about it.....

We all go through phases of drought at some stage or another, for me it's been nearly four years since I've written anything worth reading. I have been working on six different stories for the last five months, I don't see a conclusion in sight any time soon. And I have about six other ideas for new stories.

I never beat myself up about it though, I just channel all that frustration into writing poetry.

My advice would be.... don't force it, good writing is never forced. Take a break from writing seriously and just dabble around for fun, inspiration often lies in the least obvious places.

“Many people hear voices when no one is there. Some of them are called mad and are shut up in rooms where they stare at the walls all day. Others are called writers and they do pretty much the same thing.”

Thanks guys, you both really cleared things up for me. I have been reading other people's stories, gotten inspired by them and then the moment I try to put that idea on to paper the feeling vanishes. I think I do need a break, been work really hard and haven't add anytime to just relax. Maybe that has been my problem, I drained myself out and it is effecting my writing. Have a great day friends :-)

I find my mind works best first thing in the morning. If I am not inspired I go for a walk and let my thoughts roam. What helps me the most is the writing group I started. I know I have to read something out every Tuesday night and it is a good challenge.

Btw...sometimes you have to put an idea down on paper/hard drive as soon as it hits you...especially if you have a lot of other things going on in your life at the moment...

I've lost many an idea because I didn't jot it down in time, don't feel that's something unusual that just affects you...it affects all writers...

Diane's comment about writing first thing in the morning is interesting...I've noted over the past couple of years, that I write poems best in the morning, and stories always seem to be written at night...often ending up going into the early morning, but always started at night...

"Why is this?" you may ask...I haven't a clue...

I lost my writing mojo back in 2003 after a tragedy that struck my family. I didn't write anything, especially in my journal. I got back into it when in early 2005 I moved to Michigan, later to Texas, and now I'm back in my hometown.

When an idea comes, WRITE IT DOWN RIGHT AWAY. I cannot stress it any harder. It took something in my brief political career that made me write again.

Vana, are you out and about? If so, carry a small notebook with you, in case a story idea comes your way. It's what I do.
