Sam Cooke doing "Blowing In The Wind"...supposedly he had said that he wished he wrote this song, and "A Change Is Gonna Come" was his answer to this song...at least that's how the legend goes...
I have to admit I'm really quite flattered at how many people chose to use my poem We Shall Never Forget (9-11 Tribute) to honor the tenth anniversary of this event tomorrow...I was aware it was going to be used in at least one church memorial, but a Google search found it on quite a few sites...

Municipal government sites like City of Eureka Springs, Arkansas...
http://www.cityofeurekasprings.org/

Local sites like The Friends of Redford Branch Library in Detroit, Michigan...
http://friendsofrbl.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

Business sites like Michael Wasserman and Associates, Inc...
http://hotbrokerjobs.com/911-%E2%80%93-we-will-never-forget/

And blogs like this one by ChefGarfy...this one has good recipes too...
http://chefgarfy.wordpress.com/2011/09/09/2976-angels-called-to-heaven/

I can tell you with great certainty that it is on quite a few blogs...it really is very flattering...
Kerry Shepherd is looking for poetry for her blog relating to Alzheimers Disease, since September is Alzheimers Awareness Month...so, if you have anything, send it in...if you don't, go write something up...it is indeed a good cause to raise awareness about...

Life in Degrees
http://lifeindegrees.blogspot.com/

This is a non-paying gig here, btw...but she posted her request over on LinkedIn, and I thought I'd help her out here, since raising awareness about Alzheimers is indeed a good cause...
Today, September 7 marks one year since I first attempted to send anything out to a "paying gig"...since then, I got 14 stories and poems in four e-Zines, five of which I actually got paid for...and I have a poem coming out in a real book in November...oh, and I won a contest on Stories Space (I think that's around here someplace, btw)...so, there is hope for anyone...hopefully, the next year will be even better...
I don't think it would be wrong to say that Jackie Wilson was indeed a "natural" performer...watching his videos always leaves little doubt in my mind...

DM, I like your new tag line. smile

Actually, Elaine came up with that one...so, you can give her credit, or blame as the case may be...

Interesting about first person sounding like a crime scene write-up...hopefully you weren't reading one of my stories when that thought came to mind...

And I've read a few things about writing over the last year or two, and I've yet to see anyone say anything good about second person...I think that "avoid, avoid, avoid" advice is something that seems universally agreed upon in the writing world...

I have seen some good work in First Person, too. In my observation, most beginning writers tend toward First Person.

When writing in First, do you use the pov character as the observer/narrator or as the main character?

I guess I fall into the "beginning writer" category here, as almost all my stories are written in first person...out of something like fifty stories, I think only five are written in third person...and interestingly enough, two out of my first three stories are third person...so, I sort of did the opposite of your observation...I've written more in first person as I went on...

My first person stories always use the pov character as the main character...for me, I find first person to be a bit more "personal" and, of course, it's easier to express the thoughts of the main character in first person...

Besides my earliest stories, the only other ones I wrote in third person was a story called "The New Years Eve Dance" an erotic story which I wrote in third person intentionally to "depersonalize" it...the tag line is "A somewhat personal story told in the third person...a story of hope..."

I won't get into my own personal life too much, though I think most people here know I lost someone dear to me a few years back, but that story is about a 50 year-old guy who finds love again at a dance...

The other third person story I did recently was one of my contest entries here "Maria's Chance To Celebrate"...I just had no reason to put myself in it...you might say there was no room for me...
Hot Damn...could you write a short story for £30,000.00? Yeah, I bet you could..."The winning author will receive £30,000 and the five runners-up £1,000...Entries may be previously unpublished, or first published/scheduled for publication after 1 January 2011. All entries must be under 6,000 words and entirely original."...go for it my friends...

"Like the Bible could have been...if they left in the naughty parts"...OK, so that's a quote from the site...

"Welcome to Nefarious Ballerina, Poetry & Art of the Intelligently Erotic. We publish the finest "Smart Sensual" verse and photography...not pornography."...basically, they're looking for erotic poems...and they don't normally pay, though they have a print compilation that comes out from time to time, and if you make it into that, you get a copy...so, it just may be your chance to get that naughty poem you've been hiding into print...

I know a couple of folks here may find this of interest...
‎"Love Letters From The Heart" is an upcoming anthology..."Have you ever longed to share your heart - your testimony - with someone, but couldn't work up the nerve to do so? Well, now is your chance. We are currently compiling testimonies - in letter format - for Love Letters from the Heart, to be released February 2012."...1k word limit...pays $25 and a copy of the book...

Sorry to hear that Yas btw...but, I can relate...as long as it's not every day...

I don't normally like to post contests that have fees over in the contest and submission call section, but here is a contest run by the Missouri Review, which is pretty respectable...$20 entry fee though...
http://www.missourireview.com/

They offer three $5000.00 first prizes in each category of fiction, poetry and essay...so, it's a nice payday for someone...maybe a Stories Space Cadet...
Here is another publisher that may be of interest, they tend to emphasize e-publishing, but do print as well..."We are always on the lookout for quality submissions of any length, from short stories with a minimum of 3,000 words up to full length novels. We will not consider works of less than 50,000 words for printing."...so, something to think about...

Submissions Guidelines for Bluewood Publishing
http://www.bluewoodpublishing.com/Submissions.html
"We are currently seeking submissions for this line of books. The DC line has a minimum word count requirement of 45,000 words and there currently is no maximum. DC books must have a big beautiful woman heroine but may or may not have a big handsome man hero. Our preference at this time is to accept only submissions where the heroine does not lose weight to gain acceptance and/or a mate"...got it? Good Luck...

I might be putting this in the wrong spot, but here goes.

I just got a letter in the mail that states that one of my poems is going to be put in an anthology of sorts. It's also up for a prize and if I want the book, I have to pay for it. Sounds like a scam to me. If your poem is picked to be in something, shouldn't they give it to you?

Btw Sharon...I got the letter and read the whole thing over twice today...my poem is definitely going in...still tempted to pay the money to get the book when it first comes out...but, if you notice, the book comes out in November...just in time for Christmas...they do this every year btw, give out the $1k prize in September, and the book comes out in November...

Did you notice you can buy a case of 12 for $369? I know they count on some people buying them by the case, and giving them to every friend, family member and coworker as gifts...and trust me, there will be people who will...

That's why I said to you, just after the holidays this book will show up on eBay...and used poetry books aren't known for selling for big bucks...the biggest expense will be the shipping...

I'm still debating whether I want to pay extra to get it in my hands sooner...I know they count on how much authors like to see themselves "in print"...

It's funny, because this whole thing brought back an old memory...I used to work with a gentleman named Emile Toussant back in 1981/82, and there used to be a rumor going around how he was a "famous poet"...

And one day he brought into work this big book, and sure he enough, he had one poem in it...out of about 500 in the book...

That's why I'm so tempted to pay the extra to get the book as soon as it comes out...so I can start that "famous poet" rumor in the neighborhood as soon as possible...

You know what I mean...

And here was i thinking you were only into writing for the money - how wrong can one be....

I never knew I could write for chocolate covered strawberries before...
Oh yeah, this is great...a story telling contest...first prize is a luxurious weekend for two at Kinnity Castle..."The prize includes two nights accommodation, a bottle of prosecco and chocolate dipped strawberries on arrival, a four course evening meal and breakfast on both mornings."...yeah...

National Tell Tale Story Telling Competition « Heritage Week
http://www.heritageweek.ie/index.php/whats-on/national-tell-tale-story-telling-competition/

Note that they're looking for an audio or video submission of your story...three to five minutes long...

But, how many contests give you chocolate covered strawberries?
Really nice video...and the Spanish subtitles at the beginning are just an added bonus...
Here's one for everyone here on the East coast...glad to say "goodnight" and "goodbye" to Irene...
I don't know why, but this song just seems appropriate...maybe if you lived in the New York metro area at the moment you'd understand...
Right now I am being serenaded by the sounds of Hurricane Irene...it's been pretty calm outside most of the day, but since about 11 tonight it seems like it's been picking up rather significantly...it's 11:42 pm, and the real fun is not supposed to happen for a couple of hours, from what I understand...

But, it's getting rather noisy...
