I managed to win the monthly poetry contest over on Poetry Craze, which I believe is the most read poetry site on the net...they no longer offer a cash prize with the award, but it's a certain amount of "bragging rights"...sort of like getting an Editor Pick over here on Stories Space...

I've been wanting to win this darn thing for a while...seems like I always got "close but no cigar" until now...

Here be the link...
http://www.poetrycraze.com/contest-winners.html

September was a really big month for me and poetry if I do say so myself...
Talk about short fiction..."Send one to three pieces of unpublished fiction of no more than thirty words each to . The 30-word limit does not include a title (which is optional). Work that’s appeared on your personal website or Twitter is just fine with us."...pays $1 per "story"...

Note that..."Please no poetry, we don’t understand it."...OK...
Are you over 50 and write erotic stories? And don't everybody look at me now, btw...

"Joan Price is seeking erotic stories and memoir essays of high literary quality from writers over age 50, featuring steamy characters also over age 50, for a senior erotica anthology to be published Spring 2013 by Seal Press."

Go for it, my fellow AARP card carrying erotic writer friends...

Hey Sharon...you know when you enter this contest, your story is converted to a PDF e-book...

Here is the link to my contest entry...
http://shop.authorstand.com/Products/4420-the-birthday-pary.aspx

They did it all for me...I just e-mailed the story...something to consider if you want to self-publish an e-book...in fact, I believe you can just leave it on Author Stand and set a price after the contest...

I think that's how it works...maybe I'll give it a shot and see if anyone will buy it...

Lol...won't get my hopes up on that one though...
Just a reminder that you have to October 15th on this one...I happen to know for a fact that more than a few members here write stories that may be considered a bit too "adult" for this fine site known as Stories Space...

They are looking for stories originally posted either last year, or the first half of this year...I just mailed them two of mine..."Rising Like The Tide" which was done as a contest entry for the English language sister site, and "Sexual Healing" which is more of a love story than erotica, but it has been rather popular with readers, so I thought I'd give it a shot...and it would definitely be nice to see one of my stories in print...

Some day, I am sure...and the latter story "Sexual Healing" is on here, btw...

Do they accept all genres of stories?

I believe so...check it out...

And they have two contests going on now...one for very short stories, under 1500 words...and one for longer short stories over 1500...

So, there are two $250 first prizes to be had...
Calm...

At the moment anyway...nobody has annoyed me yet today...at least not too badly...
Just a note...this is one of those contests that is sort of perpetual...they do this like every three months or something...you can "like" them on Facebook or follow them on Twitter to see when they start again...

I just sent in "The Birthday Party" for their very short story contest, 1500 word limit...let's see if I can get lucky twice...
Thought this worth sharing...especially considering the growing number of poems I see using text language on poetry sites...

"Is the proliferation of texting among young people actually bringing them closer to poetry? Britain's poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy thinks that, in some ways, it is. Last week, she told the British newspaper The Guardian that there are parallels between poetry and texting."

Iowa Review buys fiction, non-fiction, poetry..."Unsolicited manuscripts are welcome during the fall semester only--September, October, and November. Submissions should be addressed to the Fiction, Poetry, or Nonfiction We pay $1.50 per line for poetry ($40 minimum) and $0.08 per word for prose ($100 minimum)"...sounds good to me...

Whoa...Electric Literature pays a cool $1000 for short stories...that's a bit more than Stories Space I might add...

Only previously unpublished stuff considered, between 1500 and 10k words...but hey, might be worth opening a new Word doc eh?

Oh yeah...this is the type of stuff I really like...a free poetry contest where you can win $1000.00...how the heck can you not like something like this, I ask you my Stories Space friends? Anyway...the poem has to have something to do with a connection to a place...go read it, and go write a poem...

Literary Landmark Press is publishing an anthology called The Spirit of Poe, all proceeds of which will go to the museum. That's everything. All proceeds. Every cent above the costs of printing and paying the contributors. We are seeking short horror fiction up to 10,000 words. We're looking for horror along the lines of Fall of the House
of Usher or The Telltale Heart"...go for it...five cents a word, and reprints considered...

This is to benefit Edgar Allen Poe House, which is in need of funding...and you can get paid in the process...sounds like a win-win situation if I've ever heard one...
Anyone here ever do the poetry reading thing? Anyone ever even been to one? Can anyone read, or does it depend on the event? How many poems do people normally read, that sort of thing?

I'm curious...thinking of looking into the possibility, I live in the NYC metro area...so, I'm sure I can find one...just don't anything about them...

Though, I figure someone here does...

I'm probably better off just going to one first, without thinking about actually reading anything, just to see what one is like...but, would like to hear from anyone who's been to one...
Coffee with French Vanilla creamer...

Of course, it's always the same thing...don't know why I bother to post it here...

Btw, coffee is an integral part of my writing process...if I ever gave up coffee, I would have to give up writing...

Just saying...

Good luck with your submission, Alan. I hope you'll keep us posted on whether your poem's accepted.

I suppose publishers who cater to older folk have to make allowances for forgetfulness.

It's interesting Lisa, just a note here...my poem was literally read around the world this past weekend, but Silver Boomer wouldn't pay five bucks for it a few months back...

It's worth mentioning because I get the impression sometimes that a lot of writers lack enough confidence in their writing to submit to stuff like this, or if they do get rejected they somehow take it personally...like their writing isn't good enough...

I tell people over and over that stuff like this is just one person's opinion, which it is, it's often based on factors other than the quality of the writing whether or not something gets accepted...and I think this is a good example...

Millions of people around the world could love something...but, someone else doesn't think it's worth five bucks...this is a clear example as to why you should not take rejection notices personally...

But, that's a subject for a whole other thread...
Just a few of the places and events my 9-11 Tribute poem was used this past weekend...

And while it's extremely touching that so many chose to commemorate this event with words I wrote...it's also somewhat emotionally overwhelming to say the least...

I really could use a long vacation...
Overwhelmed...

Though I mean that in a good way, and I did catch up on sleep today...
