My high school had German but it was a upper year course geared to kids who had gone to the local German school (a weekend program for German immigrants to teach their kids the language). Oddly, the German teacher, who was a German immigrant with a strong accent, also taught English and I had him for Grade 12. Great teacher, even if hearing Shakespeare (Macbeth that year) in his accent was a bit weird.

Aaaaaaand good morning! With all this talk about German, I feel like we should be serving some beer and sausages (Oktoberfest flashback) but we'll stick to coffee, tea (Red Rose and Scottish Breakfast), and Sara's cookies.

I am from Waterloo Region, formerly Waterloo County, in Canada where one of the first big waves of European settlement were German-speaking Mennonites from Pennsylvania (the dialect they spoke is known as Pennsylvania Dutch, an English mangling of Pennsylvania Deutsch). That, in turn, led to it becoming a popular landing for other German-speaking immigrants. My neighbours as a kid were Germans who left Europe after WWII. Never learned much of the language myself, but probably could have if I had made the effort.

Snow is mostly gone now but it was cold today. -1 with wind chill making it feel like -7 when I got home from the office. More like February than April.

Putting on a pot of vanilla rooibos for evening tea. Rooibos, Afrikaans for "red bush", is a caffeine-free tea-like plant from Southern Africa. Will have a butterscotch marshmallow and a pecan divine to go with it.

Coffee is brewing, there's pots of Scottish Breakfast and Earl Grey teas. Kettle is ready for those of us needing hot bevvies to warm up. In the fridge we got sodas and a pitcher of fresh iced tea just in case someone somewhere is actually getting spring.

I have never really liked this distinction between "literary" and "genre". Are you seriously telling me that someone like Neil Gaiman, who is both a top fantasy writer and one of the best writers working in English right now, can't be both? Fortunately, some "literary" markets are genre, or accept genre, writing. Here's a list of 50.

The first one, by the way, accepts "crime poetry". That sounds weird to me but could also result in some very interesting writing, I think.

Ape wanders into cafe grumbling about his aching back and generate exhaustion. Over-extended doing yard and house work.

Coffee is on. Tea is Scottish Breakfast and Earl Grey. Hot water is ready for other hot beverages, though we seem to be getting past hot beverage season now. Fresh pitcher of iced tea is in the fridge and the soda stock has been checked and replenished where necessary.

Is anyone else weirded out that something that tiny and cute is actually a direct descendant of a line of theropod dinosaurs, meaning cousins (evolutionarily speaking) of things like Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Planting trees today. A couple years, we took a juniper that we planted when we first landscaped the property. I replaced it with an emerald cedar today. Lovely weather for it, too. Mid-20s C, sunny, no wind to speak of (that's picked up now).

Cute moment of the day: I went to the garage to get something while I was working. A chickadee flew out. Then I went in and found a second on perched on the edge of one of my rubber boots. Didn't get my phone out in time to get a picture so you'll just have to take my word that is was soooooo cuuuuuuuute. For those who don't have chickadees where they live, here's what they look like:

Getting late, so I'll skip the coffee and just put out a pot of green tea and one of lemon ginger herbal. I'm hitting the fridge for a diet lemon-lime soda myself.

Nothing much right now. Just the odd Youtube video. Should get Netflix back so I can see season 2 of Russian Doll but they keep jacking up their prices so I'm inclined to wait until The Sandman drops (I'm hearing rumours of summer given that Neil Gaiman is in New York right now to work on the press kit), then get it for a month or two to watch those two.
