One of my favorite YouTube channels is PBS Digital Studios' Storied, which has a number of series on various literary and literature-adjacent topics. One of the them is It's Lit, which is the one that is actually about literature in general and literary matters. The latest, narrated and hosted by author Lindsay Ellis, is on Magic Realism as a genre. It focusses a lot on the history of the genre but also outlines what defines it.

I haven't read the Latin American authors associated with the genre, but have read some authors whose work definitely hits on many of the points given in the definition. Robertson Davies, a noted Canadian novelist of the mid-late twentieth century and one of my favorite authors ever, definitely got into magic realist territory more and more as time went on, with his last four or so novels being pretty explicitly magic realism.

New fabulous uniforms should get them at least a pennant, right? Style = Skill? 😋 Or maybe not.

I have only looked at Planet Scumm so far (yes, I love the title and I would so love to be published in a magazine by that title) but there may be things of interest to others. Wow, it's gone kind of quiet around here. Must be the only cafe that goes dark on a weekend. Anyhow, there's coffee and tea for them what needs it. Kettle is boiled for those seeking other hot beverages. Made a fresh pitcher of iced tea (unsweetened but you can add sugar or artificial sweetner from the supply next to the coffee machine) for those in warmer climes (which is not me today).

Scott, I love seeing Red Rose tea mentioned; it's my husband's favorite. He hates the American version, so his sister regularly sends him the Candian kind.

It's our go-to orange pekoe at home but I only drink it a couple times a week since I'm into fancy looseleaf teas. I prefer to the Tetley's we have at work, which can get quite bitter if you steep it too long on the first pass. OTOH, I get why work buys Tetley's. They sell massive boxes of it at Costco so it's fairly cheap per bag.

Tomorrow we get to watch my youngest son get married in Germany. This was supposed to be their "courthouse" wedding. They are planning a bigger celebration later for all family and friends. But now it's taking place in a castle. We'll enjoy the festivities online with my parents. We will be on mute, so my father can't be heard saying anything rude or offensive. Mine is married but there hasn't been a big celebration yet. Maybe this year once our "6th wave" (which really seems like a resurgent 5th but whatever) is over. They just had a private ceremony with an imam (she's Muslim) in Ottawa where they live. We weren't part of it due to being on the outs with him at the time but we get on well with them now.

London's got hockey and basketball teams destined for their respective playoffs so baseball will barely be noticed around here for a couple more months yet, longer if the Knights (local junior A hockey team) make the Memorial Cup (national championship). And I live in a funny place. We're halfway between Toronto and Detroit so probably have as many Tigers fans as Jays fans, esp. since the Tigers were THE team around here before the Jays started up.

My big sports thing this year is going to be the FIFA Men's World Cup in the Fall. Canada made it for the first time in over 30 years so I'll have to watch. Not that I am really expecting us to get out of the Group Stage, but stranger things have happened.
