Gooooood morning, Inspirations!

Last I checked it is a weekend. And that means ... I'm not at work. Not even on call this week.

Been prepping my stories for the anthologies and once again cussing myself out for the "big oops". Lost the original Docs file for "The Empty Office" so I had to take a PDF image of the copy on the site and use OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to convert it to a text file, then do some editing to deal with the vagaries of OCR. But I now have a usable copy.

Anyhoo, coffee is brewing. Borrowed some Kicking Horse Pass from another local institution (glances around nervously as if checking for large, white furry animals).

Tea du jour is English Breakfast and Peach.

Hot chocolate is ready to go for those what drink it, and marshmallows are restocked from the newly replenished reserves.

Google to the rescue. Found a free OCR. Sadly, it's a bit of a mess (as usual for OCR'ing images) so major editing job ahead.

And Stories Space wants to be the publisher now, so "Stories Space Publishing" is now the publisher of these anthologies instead of my LLC. This is probably a better way to drive traffic to this site which would benefit us all. smile

Sounds good. I like the idea of associating it officially with the site.

I am working on a 2nd cover option for your review. May set up poll to choose.

Look forward to it.

My Second Chances submission should be in your Inbox.

I've hit a snag with "The Empty Office" for Spooky Tales. It's one of the ones that I lost the original Docs file in "the big oops" and the PDF I have is created from "printing" the site's copoy using MS's Print to PDF driver so it's an image rather than text and Word can't convert it. Going to see it I can find some software to OCR it.

I just sent my two stories to you. Hope the formatting is mostly alright. Wasn't sure what a standard manuscript looks like.

She told me upthread she wasn't too concerned about format since she was going to reformat it anyway.

I bet the guy thought you were joking with the standing order of a dozen cases

Nope. As soon as I mentioned your name, he just nodded and smiled. 😉

grabs a couple pecan divines

So with my insomnia and busy week at work, this week has been a total bust for writing. Oh well, long weekend so maybe there's still hope.

Oh, and me today:

All in favour of ending winter immediately, say "Aye".

Aaaaaand it's morning!

Coffee is hot and in the pot

Teas of the day are Scottish Breakfast and Cream of Earl Grey

Hot chocolate mix is available with plenty of hot water and marshmallows (you should have seen the look on the guy's face when I told him I wanted a standing order for a dozen cases a month)

Have a good one!

Annie, keep yours as is. I say writers spanning the globe. The one I was in had mixed spelling, language too. I think that makes it cool.

Agreed. I write Canadian English, which is a mash-up of English and American at this point in time. I like to think it is part of my Northern charm.😊

Cover is fine. I take it from your post that options are limited. Personally I would hunt up some PD or CC art of fireworks or similar on theme art but if we are limited in options, then this is good.

I don't recall anything especially trigger-y other than the beginning of my story but if there is, a warning could be slipped into an intro.

A slight flaw in your calculations, there, Scott. 14 entries. 🙄🤣

I did a count this morning and forgot one was missing in action.

Jury duty.

Hang 'em! String 'em up!

🤣

Oh well, there's probably worse things. Like root canals and eye surgery.🙄

Actually ... I like it. People wield swords and the pen is mighter than the sword so why not wield words, eh?

I kinda like that. Tale Winds Press ... hmmm

I like it, too. See if it steps on any toes.

Nicola gave permission! Woohoooo!

Knew Nic would come through for us. She's a good one.

Love talespinners but it series name of popular book, so better not. What about Wordcraft Press? Is it better than Creative Voices Press?

I like it. Word weavers? Tale weavers?

Can this be true? I actually agree with Mandella's choice, and his reasons.

Great minds ya da ya da. 😄

It could age you or lead to eye-problems.

My eye problems can only get better. So says my eye surgeon. 😎 One eye fixed, one more to go (Feb. 28).

Following others' anthology examples. Author space on cover and copyright inside will be LLC name I'm setting up (See above Academy Arts Press i was in as example) . I was thinking about several names: Global Artists Press, Global Voices Press, Creative Voices Press, Inspiring Voices Press, United Voices Press. Any of these appeal? Other ideas?

Creative Voices Press sounds best out of that lot, with Inspiring Voices second. Global Voices and United Voices sound kind of political or activist. Global Artists sound like an arts organization or union.

Talespinners Press is probably long since taken, but is one I would contribute.

Some quick comp math, folks, using our latest as an example only:

  • There were thirteen stories entered.

  • Only ten can make the short list.

  • Only three can win prizes.

  • Therefore, even if all the stories were of equal quality, someone would not make the short list because the rules say so.

So don't assume your (or anyone else's) story is "worse" just because it does not make the top ten.

The judges have to draw a line somewhere and the rules say that line is between ten and eleven. It does not say that ten has to be a better story than eleven, only that the judges have some reason, maybe just personal preference, for putting it there.

Ditto the line between 3 and 4.

Look at a big literary prize like the Giller or Mann Booker. Are the books on the short list really THAT much better than the ones on the long list? Is the winner really the objectively "best" story on the short list? Hell no. It comes down to the judges and their perceptions and preferences.

So if you don't make the top three or top ten, realize that you're up against human judging on human standards in a field that is inherently subjective.

If you want to feel sad about not making the top ten, that's understandable. I'll happily commiserate with you over a cup of your favorite hot beverage. Been there, done that.

But don't sell your story short just because it didn't make that line.

As I said above, even if all the stories entered were equal in writing quality and handling of the theme (and I have no idea how you would even determine that since we are talking subjective art here), someone would not make the cut simply because that's how the comp works.

In fact, I would encourage people who miss the cut in a comp to dust that story off, do some editing, and see if you can find other places to submit it. Maybe some other judge or editor will disagree with our judges.

/Rant off

There is no truth to the rumour that "coffee" makes you "cough-y". So I'm putting on a pot of some fine Jamaican beans. Tea pots are full of nice hot Red Rose and English Breakfast. Hot water is ready for hot chocolate and other goodness.

Crap day here. Rain, freezing rain, ice pellets, snow. If it is H2O and falls from the sky, it's probably in our 24 hour forecast. Which means, of course, falling temperatures, too. All the more reason to keep the hot bevvies going. I've lit up the fireplace and put out some new cozy blankets too.

) I think proper names would look more professional too if everyone agrees

I just assumed real/pen names per any publication.

And The Godfather's Daughter was one of my favorites in the comp. I will be disappointed if it isn't there.😕

My own plan is to not change much unless I hear otherwise from someone. I am fairly happy with both stories and when I said "polish" I meant just a go over to clean up any language I don't like and smooth over any rough spots.
