Anyone else get gateway timeout errors this morning or was that just me?

Me. I posted about it in the bug thread in case it was an issue that needed attention.

No Talia Wednesday. Haven't seen the cats yet today. That cannot bode well. smile

Maybe they went to work with Talia? Or ate her and then fled into the shadows from which they came (you're not the only horror writer on here, you know 😎)

Weird glitch of the day: Let's Count thread in Games is showing bolded in both New Posts and the forum list, but I have viewed the latest post in the thread. Not sure why it is still showing as if there are unread posts. Not a big deal, but could become one if it keeps up going forward so that it becomes a problem to see which new posts I have already looked at.

Hm. This finally un-bolded when I checked the thread this time.

I did just have trouble getting in by the way. Getting 504 errors from Cloudflare showing that it couldn't reach the server.

I noticed the same thing across several forum threads.  And sometimes new posts I haven't read are not highlighted. Not a big deal but it is noticeable.
One thing I noticed is that if you have never posted in a given thread, it does not get bolded when new posts are added. At least that's what I have found when I have looked into the ones in New Posts that aren't bolded for me.

Actually, could we just keep the discussion in another thread or something? We do still need this thread for issues on this site, stable as it is now.

Actually, there is no reason why there should be discussions about the crossover site at all in the forums on this site. That is why I asked everyone to be patient and to message privately if they have concerns.

Ignore me. I'm just being a grump.

Two root canals at once? Eww. One at a time is bad enough. Take care. I need an implant done but have been holding off until I feel more comfortable about the COVID situation around here.

Muggy and looking a bit threatening here this evening. We are under a storm watch but other than some strong winds around dinner time, haven't had anything yet.

We got a liquor licence with the upgrade!?  Man, good software!

Beer only and don't look too closely at the paperwork.πŸ˜‰

Okay, I got in and it is clearly a work in progress. It isn't even keeping me logged when I switch between sections of the site (e.g. from stories to forum).

I’m locked out of the other site 🀣

I knew I would be, I’m so rubbish with technology, lol

Don’t suppose you could sneak me a beer, could you? 🍺

It's not you. I can't get in right now either. The site is still unstable from the upgrade, I think. My suggestion to all would be to wait until tomorrow. Hopefully, the tech crew are working on the issues.

There's a couple cases worth in the bottom of the fridge. Emergency stock I laid in. It's Sleeman's. Good Canadian beer (even if the company is now owned by Sapporo).

Ugh is all I'm gonna say about the other site ..

I seem to recall you having the same reaction here right after the upgrade (as, to be honest, did I). Hopefully once things get fixed and shaken out, it will get better. I won't get over there until this evening, probably.

Warm weather here today but it is a here and gone one. 30C high today, by Thursday we are supposed to be down to 19C. At least it's not as muggy as it was a couple weeks back.

i'm not keen on the new site, but i can live with it. i may even grow to like it in time.

one concern i have, though, is that i am told i have no forum posts. i know i had a conversation with scott in the coffee lounge.

hey, i like the paragraph spacing in this forum editor.

That is strange. I just check on the "My Post" section at the Forum Home page and it gives me a list of all my postings.

Yeah, it goes back to like 2014 on mine (though I didn't become very active until the last three or so years.)

What exactly is cosmic horror? πŸ™„

It's a school of horror usually traced to American horror writer H. P. Lovecraft, though I know of some good examples that predate him and were influences on him (early twentieth century English writer William Hope Hodgson would be one). Basically, instead of supernatural evil being the core of the threat as you see in something like Dracula or horror involving the Devil or demons, the horror is due to the essential indifference of reality. We live in a vast universe that doesn't give a poop whether we live or die and that tends to be hostile to human life by nature rather than due to "sin" or "the Fall" or whatever. There is no God or other benign creative power looking over/after us and that makes the universe darned scary. Crosses don't repel vampires and an exorcism requires an act of dark sorcery, not faith. The monsters are generally alien (from other planets or dimensions) or even natural forces rather than supernatural ones. In terms of well-known examples (besides Lovecraft), the original Alien is often cited as a modern example. While I have not read the novel or seen the movie, Jeff Vandermeer's Annihilation gets described as cosmic horror a lot, too.

I would say that if you want to read one example that really exemplifies the genre, read "The Colour Out of Space" by H. P. Lovecraft. Others might disagree, but I find that to be one of the best examples of cosmic horror. Apparently, the latest film version starring Nicholas Cage is a bit of a mixed bag, but does get the cosmic horror.

Don't have any cosmic horror lying around right now. The ones I have on here are too long. Will keep this in mind for the future, though. Cosmic horror is pretty much my favorite sub-genre.

Good morning!!! Coffee's on, kettle's on, Sara restocked the cookies.

Lovely weather here on a holiday Monday. No plans, but probably hit the road/trails again later.

So you want to SMELL like pumpkin spice? I mean, toothpaste I can kind of see (not my cuppa, but I can sort of see it) but deodorant??

I truly love the design. It's so clean and the last post button is wonderful. I like how it loads and just takes you to the last post--very a la Matrix.

I like this clean, stripped-down look so much that I've been toying with the software I use for the site I run to see how much I can strip it down. It is not easy, though. SS had the benefit of moving to new software rather than trying to rework what was already there.

No famous stories for me yet. Takes a while around here, I guess, given the low traffic.

To be honest, there is a magic word, Twitter. That and possibly people following my Nurses story.
I tweet mine and promo them on a couple of my other (non-SS-related) forums but I don't exactly have hoards of followers (and, to be honest, I rather like it that way). Social media just isn't my thing. Even on here, I generally stick to the forums and don't get much into chatting or profile posting on friends' walls and that sort of thing.

Lindsay Ellis is a Youtuber who I know primarily from her role as one of the hosts of the PBS Digital Studios series It's Lit. She is, however, also a published author, with one s-f novel out and its sequel currently on preorder for an October release.

Recently, she put out this video on her channel and I thought it was an interesting look at the world of writing for the publishing industry. She concedes at the beginning that, in spite of the title, she did suspect some of it going in but had those suspicions confirmed (not entirely to her pleasure you might be able to tell).

Sales trainers have a cure for that. It's called "GOYA", which stands for "Get Off Your Ass", meaning you're not going to feel any better moping around. Instead, get moving and do something constructive. Even if you have to force yourself in the beginning, once you're into it, you'll feel better.

Not sure if that helps, but it works for me!

GOYA only gets me so far, really just giving me something to do to distract me from the general sense of meh. Went for a bike ride this morning and watched a writing video (which I will post in a thread) and that perked me up, but there's a still a general sense of wanting to just curl up into a ball and cry that will be there until this thing passes.

Good morning! Coffee is a-brewing and kettle is a-boiling.

Day 2 of the long weekend and I am still kind of "at sea". I guess it's depression but I just feel very unmotivated and sort of unhappy. Not down in the dumps unhappy, just kind of lacking in joy.

Double header today. And no plans. Proof of a loving God.

My standard of proof for the existence of a loving Deity is a bit higher. COVID spontaneously vanishing and all remaining victims, including long-haulers, healed might do it. πŸ˜‡ (signed, Cranky Agnostic Ape)

Been completely and utterly useless today. I mean, I cooked breakfast (pancakes) but that was about it. Just do not feel like doing anything today so I've just been puttering around doing meaningless crap. Could probably have bashed out a story if I felt like it but I didn't feel like it.

Enough of my moaning and groaning. Afternoon tea time. Kettle is brewing and I've got one cookie from each of our cookie crew.

Good morning!! Coffee is brewing, kettle is boiling and we have cookies galore thanks to Sharon and Sara (they both being with "S". Hmmm.)

Long weekend is officially underway. Weather looks ... decent. Sunny in the mornings, chance of showers later in the day. Warmer than the last couple days and a bit more humid but still better than last weekend when the humidity hit "Unbearable". No plans. Thinking about biking today but also thinking about just crashing with a book or doing some writing. Back is a bit glitchy so I'm not sure going too far afield is such a hot plan.

I am recovering from my first week back at work after 2 weeks of vacay

Someone on another board mentioned getting a pumpkin spice Blizzard at Dairy Queen. That I could probably get behind.

I live in Los Angeles, CA. There's no seasons just hot, hotter and hottest w/ Santa Ana winds.

Although, I do love the cold.

Yeah, I think seasons are one thing I would actually miss if I moved to a climate like California, or the tropics for that matter. There's something about having a cycle of "seasons" that gets into your blood when you live in a temperate climate, I think. Helps keep your awareness of the progression of time or something like that.

LBD?

Lewy Body Dementia, I think. Not something you joke about, really.

Quote by rolandlytle

Hi, everyone! 🍷

Sorry for my long absence. After the news of my father, My brain was pretty messed up. I had more than a week of bonkers and many bad days after that. I fell and broke a tooth which had to be pulled. I have an irrational fear of dentists, so that was a real struggle. My doctor found a suspicious mole on my neck that I will soon be excised. All of this may seem bad, but the real problem is the progress of my LBD. It has multiplied any real issues. I have had a hard time getting to SS.

My LBD has made the transition to the new site difficult. My whole life runs on a set schedule and routine. Dealing with change is difficult, yet I am trying to get used to the new format.

I have sorely missed your companionship in my daily life. I continue reading your stories, though slowly.

BTW, I have shaved off my rather large 'Santa Clause' like beard, and my youngest grandson took almost a week before he recognized me. It was pretty funny seeing everyone's reaction to the appearance of my face. I certainly hope it was not fear or disgust. πŸ˜€

I hope you all stay healthy and happy. ❀

Nice to hear from you Roland. Sorry to hear you've been having a tough time. We sometimes forget that change is even harder for some. Glad you were at least able to make this post.

I used to wonder how my son would react if I shaved my beard off. I grew it almost a decade before he was born so he has never really seen me without it save some really old pictures. Now that he's grown up, he would probably either laugh or shrug it off.
