Forum

We have a thread for reporting issues and problems. How about one for the good stuff. What changes or new features do you like? What is better about 2.0? This is meant to be a positive thread so please keep complaints, concerns, issues in the relevant threads.

To kick off:

I love My Comments. All my comments in one place so I can just go there and see them all without having to go story by story.

I am very pleased to have forums that are usable on mobile devices. I spend a lot of time on a Samsung Galaxy S20 with a 6.5" screen and found the forums on the old site unusable, esp. compared to other sites I am on that have had mobile adaptable interfaces for years. So love the new forum interface.

Well, good morning all. Back from a morning ride on the ole bicycle. Starting to think about writing a story about cycling. Maybe a 'kids with bikes" story, as some call media like Stranger Things and the eighties movies that inspired it.

Coffee is brewing, kettle is boiling, and there's tea in the pot. There's always an assortment of breakfast-y goodies on the side table and, of course, Sara's cookies.

Won’t bore y’all with the details except that I did have a basil carcinoma removed. Scalpel to the face. Stitches under the eye. I’ll now have a scarrr. I can officially do pirate jokes with the look of authenticity. Hopefully, the dermatologist got all the cancer. TBD.

Hope that they got it all as well. Take care and get yourself healed. A facial scar brings you one step closer to being the movie tough-guy we all know you should be. 😋

My story about the girl in the dog park sucks. Wah. Not gonna even bother to edit it.  I finished it. Sometimes you've gotta know when to throw em back in the pond. I'll try a story about magpies today.

Combine them. Have magpies stalking the girl in the dog park.😲

Good morning!! Coffee is brewing and kettle is boiling. Seem to have recovered from my adventures yesterday, or at least recovered enough to not feel like crap.

No big plans today, just R&R. Maybe some reading, maybe some writing, maybe just veg.

Never had iced oatmeal before, so I shall try a couple with my evening tea (Coronation Street green). Had a lovely day canoeing at the local conservation area. Paying for it tonight with stiff muscles. Canoeing uses a rather different set of muscles than cycling so I guess they were getting a bit "rusty".

Oh, and I notice that when posting on a thread we now have separate buttons for "Submit and Watch" and just "Submit". Love it. Thanks for that fix.

That being said, why aren't there any sidebars? It is much preferable to be able to cursor to a point as opposed to scrolling to a point. I honestly feel like I went to a restaurant with one of those 20-page menus with 300 different options when all I really wanted was a hamburger.

I think the lack of sidebars is because of the mobile device focus. Xenforo, the software I use, has sidebars on a desktop screen (if you use them in your layout) but when you get to a smaller screen like a phone, or zoom in real tight on a desktop, they get moved (e.g. the right side drops to the bottom). Sidebars are nice on a desktop, in other words, but just don't work on a small screen.

A small glitch I am seeing that I though I should post in case others have it. I have a red 1 on my bell that absolutely refuses to go away even though I have cleared all my notifications. Not sure what's up with that. Usually, a refresh gets rid of "stuck" numbers there but this one is visible on both desktop and phone and won't go away.

Quick tip: If you notice that you still have a red number on your bell even after checking notifications, hit Refresh in your browser. I have noticed that the top bar does not always refresh when you are navigating the site (e.g. if you just go from one forum to another).

Question: If they are using pink and blue, what do they do if someone put their gender identity as fluid or non-binary? These are valid options on here. Seems to me the indicator should be neutral in colour and just show online status. A simple circle that is light coloured for offline and bright for online. Or maybe red for off and green for on.

Check your ego at the door. I'm just critiquing, nothing of mine on the chopping block.

Are you saying we should check our egos because you're critiquing? 😜

Nice bike ride this morning. Got fairly sweaty due to the humidity but survived. Just takin' it easy this afternoon. One more week of staycation left to go.

Not sure if this has been covered or addressed. Have people been able to post on people's profiles? I have tried using the URL, which is a pain, but the image doesn't show up, just the link.

Haven't tried. I don't do that much, to be honest. I can try on yours.

EDIT: Okay, I posted a GIPHY link on your profile and it worked. Not sure what's up. Did it give a preview when you pasted the link in the box on External?

Pardon my French, but f-it, I just got 84 more notifications showing up after the notification about Violet's reply to me showed up.

What I want is to only get notified about forum posts if they are a reply to one of my posts. Otherwise, I don't need to get a notification for every post in every thread I have posted in.

But there could be important notifications buried in the forum madness, or even when that gets fixed, sandwiched between friend activity so 'clear all' might not be a practical solution, and agree about it stopping at 10 being tedious.
Agreed, which is why not being able to go through it one at a time is a problem. If they get the Watch thing fixed, my list at least should never be that long ever again. Now that I've got it cleaned out and am cleaning up my Watched threads, mine should be a lot smaller. Really, though, we should be able to control what notifications even go in there. Again, something the software I use on my own site allows on a very fine-grained level.

One thing that would help with the Watched threads would be the ability to get a list of Watched Threads similar to the My Posts and New Posts lists. The software I use on the site I run has this and it's a great way to check and audit your watches.

So, I had like 220-something notifications this morning, of which only a few actually showed up in the notifications when I clicked the "bell". After clearing the ones that were there, the "bell" now shows 214 notifications, but then it says No Notifications when I click it to get the list. Sounds like something messed up with notifications?

EDIT: I got a new notification which then allowed me to clear a few more, so I am down to 204. But why can I not access and clear all of them now?

Okay, so if I use Clear All instead of clearing them one at a time, then I can step through them in batches of 10. So my bell is now cleaned up. Still, if one is going through them one at a time, it should not be stopping you at 10 and making you wait.

Oh, and can we please, please have the ability turn off the option to automatically Watch a thread when we post in it. I have been on a board before where it was on automatically and it just generates way too many notifications (probably part of the reason for me having so many notifications above). I prefer to turn Watch "on" when I need it rather than having to remember to turn it off every time I post in a thread that I don't want to monitor.

We are into our second (third?) week of warm, muggy weather. I'll take cool and wet, now, to be honest. Give my poor AC a break if nothing else.

Good morning. Pouring out the stale coffee from last evening and putting on a fresh pot. Kettle is boiling for tea.

Paprika chicken. Got the recipe maybe 25-30 years ago from a woman of Hungarian ancestry we both knew in grad school.

It's been a quiet afternoon after a busy morning herding kids in the church nursery.

Herding kids or herding cats, is there a difference? 😒😀

Good evening. Another muggy one here and apparently that will continue for a couple days more. Oh well, that's why AC was invented, eh. Just saw on CNN that the US, including the states near us, is in for a warmer than usual Fall so I guess we will be, too, though I have not heard Environment Canada's forecast for the Fall yet.

Contemplating my next story. I have an opening scene in my head that brings back the musicians from Song To Keep Monsters Away and starts to get a supernatural mystery of some sort going. It does connect to the events in the current story but I am still sorting out what exactly is going on.

And fresh cookies. Hmmm. Ginger snaps, maybe?

Interesting one. When I go Forum - New Posts (love how quick and easy that is in this software, BTW), some threads are bolded, some are not. Both contain posts that I have not read. Maybe it only highlights for ones that I have started or posted in?? Not a problem, just fishing for some useful information.

Is the ability to have copyright statement automatically added going to return at some point? Or should we start putting a manual one in the Author's note or something like that? Just realized today there's no copyright statement on any of the stories.

Okay, so I am fiddling with story submission and tested the "Show on profile" to see what it does. If you set it to "No" then it prompts for an author name. So does that mean if you submit with Show on Profile set to "No" and a name entered, it will show in the Stories list as being by that name with no connection to your profile? Is this a way to have a "pen name"? Or will there still be some indication of which user account posted it? I am not sure what to think of it because I am not really willing to submit using it just to see what happens.

Maggie? Molly? New site guys?

I may have a new favorite comics writer, or at least someone who is up there with Neil Gaiman, my old favorite. Kieron Gillen is, like Gaiman, English. He has done everything from creator-owned indie comics to writing for some major Marvel titles (Star Wars, X-men). I discovered him through Once & Future, a fantasy series about the return of King Arthur ... as an undead villain. After that, I started looking up what else Hoopla had by him.

I am now reading an older series of his called Phonogram (he owns the rights and Image Comics is the distributor). It is set in the early noughties music scene in the UK (Bristol, I think) and has people capable of music-based magic called phonomancers. A lot of the action takes place in clubs. In fact, the second series, collected into the graphic novel The Singles Club, has seven parallel stories, each about a different character, taking place on a single night in the same club. Very well-written and I am quite enjoying it, even if a lot of the music references require visits to Google (e.g. I had never heard of The Pippettes or Long Blondes before). Gillen was a music and gaming writer before he started doing comic books and it shows.

My badges look okay but I don't have an actual pre-upgrade count to check against so I'm can't say that's 100% sure. I have all my comp badges for sure, though.

More of a question than an issue:

Is there a way to send a PM to multiple addresses? When I select a second address, it overwrites the first one. I guess this prevents "spamming" but there are times when it is legit to "cc" another user or two.
