Also, I ended up starting a totally new story last night even though I've not finished the one I'm still working on. Maybe that will help me finish it somehow?

It's worked for me before, esp. if I am stalled. Or sometimes the new story turns out to be the one I prefer and gets done first.

Oh, I did just find a place where age shows up (belated apologies to GodsAngel). If you hover over a username in the My Friends list, the pop-up shows age. Please remove it or give us control over it so we can decide if it shows. There's no point to making the birthdate on our profiles private but then revealing our age in the profile preview. Same pop-up also shows if you hover over a username in your Inbox but I assume it's calling the same window so fixing it in one will fix all.

Now on to water with fresh lime juice squeezed in (half a lime to a cup of H2O)

Strange. Are they really old ones or something? I know mine are all there but I only started writing here 5 years ago and most of mine date to the past two.

Good afternoon. Hadn't realized no one had set things up this morning. I guess I was too focussed on learning new toys still. It's getting late, but I put a pot on for those who want coffee for their afternoon "tea". Kettle is also on.

Good luck with the critique group. I should probably get involved in something like that. Have never really delved into the literary scene around here. This must be one. Emma Donoghue, author and screenwriter of Room and one of Canada's top authors at the moment, lives in London (originally from Ireland, though) and there's a few other Canadian authors from this area.

Love this paragraph. Wells was one of my earliest sci-fi reads.

The magnificent opening of Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House:

ā€œNo live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood for eighty years and might stand for eighty more. Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone.ā€

I first read War of the Worlds in grade 7 or 8. Was already a fan of the 1953 George Pal film at that point and I think I had heard the radio drama as well.

The Jackson opening is another great one. Just didn't think of it earlier. Should pull that novel down and read it again. I have that and a collection of her short stories on my shelf.

"After you, my dear Alphonse." (from Jackson's story of the same name, far creepier in context than it sounds)

Hopefully the issues will get resolved but until then I am leaving. thanks

I got a message saying the confirmation email was sent but I'm still waiting for it. 😐

I'm still waiting for a confirmation email so I can delete my account.

If one of the issues is your age showing, please check your PMs. It is NOT visible. I have checked this morning. And your images save a couple are all in Private now and cannot be accessed (again, checked this morning), which was another issue you raised. Not sure what else there is.

The opening paragraph of H. G. Well's The War of the Worlds. Sets the stage for what is to come beautifully. Richard Burton did a wonderful reading of it to open the concept album based on the novel by British producer Jeff Wayne.

"No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man’s and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinise the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. With infinite complacency men went to and fro over this globe about their little affairs, serene in their assurance of their empire over matter. It is possible that the infusoria under the microscope do the same. No one gave a thought to the older worlds of space as sources of human danger, or thought of them only to dismiss the idea of life upon them as impossible or improbable. It is curious to recall some of the mental habits of those departed days. At most terrestrial men fancied there might be other men upon Mars, perhaps inferior to themselves and ready to welcome a missionary enterprise. Yet across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us. And early in the twentieth century came the great disillusionment."

I don't feel the site feels secure. I can't hide my age.

I checked some profiles including yours and could not see birthdate. It only appears for the owner of the profile, it seems, not anyone else.

So how long until we get private albums/photos and my profile shows up if I'm not logged in? I can't delete the pictures that are showing. I don't feel the site feels secure. I can't hide my age.

I still have to wait for my avatar to be approved?

There is a Private album now. Go to My profile, Media and you can move pictures to Private. Click the little triangle in the top right of a photo and choose Move, then select Private. Delete is on that menu, too.

Not sure about the other two off hand.

They need to let us hide birthdate for sure. Forcing us to show that probably violates a few privacy laws.

I didn’t want to, because I knew it was depressing, but I watched Nomadland. It was as expected. But I watched because Francis M. is an incredible actor. I love her to bits. Someday, I want to see her to go Kathy Bates crazy in a movie. A hammer to the tied ankle would be delightful.

Next Up: The new Mortal Combat with the boy. We’ll take turns screaming, ā€œMOR-TAL COM-BAT!ā€

Given Hollywood's penchant for pointless remakes of perfectly good movies, shouldn't Misery be due soon?šŸ™„

Checked that and it’s ticked, just not working sad
I think one of them mentioned making profiles private at one point. They should make them public again once the issues with public vs private photos are resolved. I can only think this is related to that work.

Chat (IM box) isn't working .  When I click on an old story link in my mail it says page not Found...

So it's sad that friends can't chat here .. sad

I imagine it will come eventually. Just needs work done. They definitely need it working for other sites.

Just noticed that non-members can’t look at profile pages at all, so if they read a story they like, they can’t look up your others - unless there’s a setting for that I haven’t adjusted?

If you go into Privacy (tap/click your avatar in the top right and it is on the menu) the first setting is "Profile is visible to non-members/search engines". Mine is on and I thought that was the default but you might want to check it.

One that Survivor pointed out in another thread:

At the end of stories, there used to be recommendations for other stories the reader might like. This should be brought back at some point, even if it is not a priority item.

Nice feature to bring back some day, though. Worth calling out its absence.

Well, I don't know if my being almost 32 counts as "old fart territory," but I hear you. It's like - I remember when she was first born and have watched her grow up over the years, yknow? I feel like I blinked and now she's almost 18.
I had a buddy whose oldest brother had his first when we were in our early teens so he was an uncle at like 12 or something so similar situation to you, I imagine, when his oldest nephew went off to university. But only 32? That's not even "old and wrinkly." Jane's older than that, isn't she?

When you post an external image link (e.g. a Giphy gif) it is hiding text in the post similar to how videos used to.

There are no notifications being generated for comments. The only way to know if your stories are getting new comments is to keep checking My Comments. (if this is just a setting I am missing, let me know)

All I want to know is, will I ever get my comments back. They really do mean so much to me. Thank you

They should all be back now. Even the replies to comments on stories are back since they re-imported the comments last night. And the comments on my profile are there now (you have scroll down a bit to get to comments in the profile, esp. on a mobile device).
No, I had six comments but now I only have two. It's not just me, if you look at Tams story The Mimic, all the comments are gone and I made a comment on your story Saturday Afternoons at the Opera, that has also gone. You had four comments but now you only have one.
They did warn us before they re-imported the comments from the old site that comments made since the original conversion would be overwritten. I know that would apply to the comments on mine since that was posted after the upgrade. Would that apply to the ones on your story and Tams? Given that it fixed the profile comments and brought in the replies to story comments that were missing, I think I am okay with the small sacrifice.
Thank you. My play The Scarlet Lady had some lovely comments. It was posted on the new 2.0 so I guess they are now lost forever. I hope you managed to read my comment on your story before it was deleted.
Actually, thanks to notifications not working for comments (which is something I should post in the the issues/bugs thread, I guess), I never saw any except one Sara did when I was testing something. No worries, though. If you don't want to rewrite it, that's cool. I haven't got around to your play yet so you'll at least have one one it eventually. šŸ˜‹

In Stories, editing is disabled for old comp entries. I see no reason why this should be the case since it was possible to edit them on the old site and even for entries in a current comp, there is no rule about not editing an entry.

Log in tip:

If you are having login issues with Chrome on a desktop, go to Settings - Passwords and turn off Auto Sign-In. Then when you click Login and Chrome prompts to sign in with your stored username, click Cancel and login using the actual login screen. Make sure to click Remember Me on. After that, it seems to work properly. This may also work with other Chromium-based browsers, e.g. Microsoft Edge, Brave, Chromium (on the off chance anyone here uses Linux).

When I click on 'My Media' on my profile, it just eggtimes for me. I can see other people's, just not my own.

Actually, your Media page is doing it for me, too. I see you just signed up recently. Wonder if something got messed up with your profile.

Oo, that worked. Maybe we can have text and videos together now?

Cannabis can be smoked ... outside. Inside is a no smoking of any kind zone. Of course, consumables wouldn't be a problem.

As for booze, we can't stop you from BYOB but we aren't going to stock it.

And I am not a country fan, but recall Tom T. Hall. Was a bit surprised to find he was still alive but I think that's just because I haven't heard anything about him in so long.

...and in other news my (not so) little second cousin is turning 18 next Sunday and now I feel old and wrinkly. Plus she's in her first year of college, too.

Yeah, my brother's kids hitting college (they are a bit older than mine) was the first sign I had slipped into the next generational bracket. Then mine did and my eldest nephew got married. So I guess I am well into old fart territory now, eh.😜
