Crazy old ape
Must confirm that William Hope Hodgson is PD. I am pretty sure he is given that he died in the trenches in WWI. His Carnacki the Ghost Finder is basically a Victorian Ghostbusters. And his sea-going horror stories are great, too, but I can't hope to do him justice there. He was a sailor himself so his sea stories have an authenticity that a hydrophobic landlubber like me can't achieve.

Actually, G-force isn't related to speed. It is related to acceleration.
If you are moving outside a gravity field at a constant speed, there are no G-forces on the body because there are no accelerations happening. In that case, you would not write G, you would give a speed.
1G acceleration means accelerating at the same rate as when you fall towards the Earth under gravity, approx. 9.8 m/s squared. So 2G would be twice that, an so on. Authors use G rather than speed because if you are accelerating, your speed is constantly changing. And writing it in m/s squared is even more complicated than using G.
(yeah, it's an old thread, but I figured it doesn't hurt to correct his misunderstanding for others)
Footnote: Deceleration is just acceleration in the opposite direction to your direction of travel so G also applies.

Sunny here but not exactly warm. There's a system coming through over the next couple days that should plunge us nicely into winter. 10-15cm of snow, maybe even 15.
Tinkering with a story. It has been in my head for a while as a prologue to another story, but I am no longer sure where that other story should go, so I am fleshing out the prologue into its own story. I can always link them if/when the original story comes to fruition.
Got the housework done and just settling in at the computer for a while. Just drinking lime water for now but will make a tea closer to lunch.

She is talking about a challenge, not a competition. So no judging or winners, just a theme and you get a Challenger (or whatever it is called) badge if you write a story on that theme.

Major grocery shopping trip today. Stocking up. Weather is lovely, if on the cold side.
What sports are functioning down there? NFL? NCAA? The Grey Cup, our national football (the Canadian version of American football, that is) championship would normally be going down either last week or this week but the CFL cancelled their 2020 season rather than deal with COVID. And I think our university football is similarly defunct this year, else I would be hearing my alma mater down the street crowing again (they've had a run of good seasons of late).
Anyhow, no leftovers here. Not a turkey in sight. Frankly not fond of the bird so we pretty much only do one if we are hosting Christmas.

Talked to Kimmibegood on another site where we are both members. All is good. She is dealing with some difficult personal matters and that was affecting her mood. She sends congratulations to the winners and apologizes if she affected our celebrations. It was not really the comp results that upset her but the personal situation.

One of the best cures is to read Neil Gaiman's "Make Good Art" speech. Google it up. Very inspiring for creatives of all stripes even if Gaiman himself is primarily an author (I think it was a commencement address, but not sure now).

This was maybe the most amazing competition I have entered. The format was quite different and the ability to have multiple entries with different lengths offered some new opportunities and challenges.
And the writers of SS came through. Plenty of entries, plenty of great ideas and writing. I am so happy to have been a part of it and extends thanks to all who joined in the fun and congratulations to all who won, place, showed, or made the short list. We have a great bunch of people here.

I was very happy with The Goddess Dances and knew from the reactions readers expressed in the comments that it had probably the best chance of my entries, but a first place? More than I dreamed. Thanks to the judges for seeing something in it that even I may not have and to all who read and said wonderful things about it. Today, it's the ape that's dancing (hey, it's how I worship Talala
)
And I see that my annual contribution to Hallowe'en managed to finish just off the podium so a hearty thank you for that, too.
And that I was just off the podium in the overall, too, for which I offer a third hearty thank you.

I remember having a bad thing for Brooke Shields back in her heyday as a teen star. We're supposedly the same age, though some sources have her a year younger, and our birthdays are even quite close together. Back in high school, I fantasized an entire story involving her and me, including fantasizing her taking the lead in the movie version. The Rankin-Bass animated Hobbit was, on the other hand, very good even if it lost some bits (like Beorn). The Hobbit can be effectively done with a 2 or 3 hour movie. I have no idea what Jackson was thinking other than milking Middle Earth for all it's worth.

Cool. My brother occasionally gets snakes in the office. Releases them in the field next door which is likely where they come from. My office, on the other hand, just gets the odd mouse.
