Indeed. I was going to do another count myself but Rump has saved me the trouble. With three comps and that number of stories, the judges are going to be busy little beavers for a while.
Good thing Halloween was yesterday because the weather here has gone into "haunting" mode. High winds and rain until at least noonish they are saying, then a chance of showers for the remainder of the day. At least the wind might get more of the damn leaves down. Three of my trees have dropped but others are stubbornly hanging on. That said, it is fairly normal to have some trees still with leaves at first snowfall.

The latest Geeks Guide to the Galaxy is an interview with screenwriter (Sinister, Sinister 2, Dr. Strange) and novelist (his latest is Sea of Rust from 2017) C. Robert Cargill. The focus is on his new collection of short fiction, but they roam pretty widely over his career to date and there's some good discussion about things like doing research on other cultures (one of his novels has a lot of indigenous Australian mythology and folklore involved), getting script deals, and the process of writing some of the stories. He has a good story about meeting his screenwriting partner Scott Derrickson and selling Sinister to Jason Blum of Blumhouse. Good interview.

Okay, that was kind of sad even for me. Nice-ish day here (for October 31). Went for a walk for my daily exercise. Saw some kids in their costumes and lots of Halloween decorations. You would barely know that COVID is happening, really.
Kissing over the jack o'lantern? Kissing under the skeleton hanging in your tree (saw a few of those this afternoon)? You're right. Halloween needs a kissing tradition. Just need to decide what it should be.

I think if I was going to a Halloween party tonight, I would put on a tux, slip a toy gun into a shoulder holster, and carry a gun-metal cigarette case (of candy cigarettes). Sir Sean Connery died at 90. One of my favorite actors of all time. So many great parts, even if he is still chiefly remembered for playing James Bond.
Hmmm. No martini ingredients here so I guess I will have a Scottish Breakfast tea in honour of Connery's beloved homeland (he was an ardent Scottish nationalist).

Chilly here today with a chance of showers. Still might try to squeeze in a walk but we shall see how things shake out.
I think I shall leave my comp participation at the current three stories. My new story is going to be longer than I can get reasonably get done by tomorrow given my perfectionist approach to editing. Perhaps an idea for something in Ultra Short will come to me, though. Those I can do in a day or so based on experience writing micros for another site.

Yeah, there was a real run of new stories yesterday, eh. I started a new story last night but not sure I'll get it done by Saturday so it may end up as a non-comp story. Was going to work on it today but got sucked into a problem at work. So much for vacation.

Virginia has some nice country. We visited Shenandoah National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway on a family trip a couple years back and we drove down so saw a lot of territory on the way. It is a surprisingly short drive from Ontario to Virginia, esp. if you have multiple drivers so can rotate rather than taking a lot of breaks.
Western Canada had snow a week or two ago and it reached as far as Northwestern Ontario but my region has been spared so far. Definitely Fall, but no sign of the white stuff (yet).

I wouldn't mind getting out of the city a bit. We are just South of Lake Huron and there's plenty of small communities up there where we could move. Or we could get some lakefront property between communities, which would be my ideal. They get more snow up there but this would likely be post-retirement so won't matter much if we get snowed for a couple days. And, really, after working from home most of the past 7 months, I am pretty sure I could manage it. Only question mark might be the quality of the Internet up there. My wife is more of a city girl, though, (she grew up in Shanghai, China, which makes even the largest cities in Canada look tiny by comparison) so not sure if it will happen or not.

Yeah, I have my eye on that one, too. Not that familiar with Minchin but I've heard him sing Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar and he was incredible so I am trying to listen to him more.

Sometimes, the most inspirational thing for writing can be listening to another writer, especially one who has been at it for a while and is very eloquent in discussing both the craft and the business of writing. Which brings me to a recent episode of the podcast "David Tennant Does A Podcast With" (yes, that's the title of the podcast) in which the Scottish actor has a conversation with Neil Gaiman. While I have read and heard Gaiman discussing writing before, I never tire of it. And Gaiman and Tennant know each other well, having worked together on the TV series Good Omens (Gaiman as writer and showrunner, Tennant as one of the stars) which adds to the rapport.

Xander, I wish I had your attitude to being up at night but it bothers me to no end when I can't get to sleep because I know I will be dealing with the effects the next day or two after.
Nice but cool here. Rump, when we say the temperature falls up here, 82F is usually the starting point, not the destination.
Kettle's on. Coffee machine, too. Danishes, doughnuts, and other such goodies laid out on the snack counter (along with the inevitable cookie jars). Help yourselves!

Good afternoon Sara and others. Bit grey and meh here today. Got my flu shot (they finally came out in Ontario) and did some shopping. Otherwise, all work stuff today. Meetings, meetings, meetings, including one where they sucked me in at the last minute (got the invite like 40 minutes before the meeting).

No real surprises there. The longest story allowed in Ultra Short is 120 words so even I can get one of those in a day or two while a Full Length can go up to 3653 so requires a lot more effort.
We have 11 unique authors so far (by a manual count could be an +/-1 error bar on that). Love to see that go up regardless of category. I'm sure we have more writers than that wanting to join in the festivities. Still plenty of time to get those stories written and in.
For myself, I have a poem in the 40 word Ultra Short and a story in the 873 word Flash categories. The former is in my sig, the latter linked below (but will get added to my sig in the next day or so)

If I had iTunes money, yeah, but I won't get more cards till next month. My subscriptions are funded by iTunes cards and I get them every month but I used this month's for other stuff oops.
Ah, I am not up on the vagaries of iTunes and likely never will be. I am a died in the wool Windows and Android guy. If I was using a music service, it would likely be Youtube Music (formerly Google Play Music) or Spotify and paid for with good old-fashioned money via my Paypal.
