Crazy old ape
I read about 2/3 of World War Z back when it first came out. Not a huge fan of the carnivorous zombie genre but Brooks did a decent job of it. Forget why I didn't finish. Possibly life interrupted.
I've been dancing around books recently, but the one I am definitely going to finish is The Flame, Leonard Cohen's final collection. It includes poems, sketches, selections from his notebooks and some other bits and bobs. The book was planned before his death and Cohen had basically finished a lot of the work of selecting items and had even arranged the poetry section but died before it was finished so a pair of editors and his son Adam finished the work.

I noticed that the cover image on my poem On Seeing the Light (Re)born was upside down, a problem that I thought I had fixed back when I posted it. The image was also upside down in the gallery. I deleted it from gallery and re-uploaded a fixed copy, but the upside down one reappeared. And here's where it gets interesting: There are two human figures on the upside down one, but they are cropped out of the new copy I was trying to upload. It's as if the old image is still there and comes back if the new image has the same filename. So, I renamed the fixed file and, lo and behold, it was upright when I uploaded it so I made it the cover image. But why was the old image still there after I deleted it and why did it reappear when the new file had the same name (instead of overwriting it with the new file)? It's fixed for me so this is just an FYI at this point.

The buzz around Thirteen's first couple episodes has been quite positive. I am woefully behind on the new series (seen Eccleston and Tennant up to Martha Jones arrival plus a couple of the Tennant movies) but it sounds like her series is going to be fairly standalone so maybe I can get into it again.
Currently eyeing Haunting of Hill House. The reviews have been excellent. Alas, my battery is dying and I left my laptop power supply at home (I'm in Phoenix, AZ at a conference) so it will have to await my return.

Here in Ontario, we rarely get more than the odd tropical depression. We are simply too far from the ocean and they tend to fizzle long before hitting us. Hazel hit us back in the fifties but I only heard about it from my parents (I wasn't born for another decade). Now, tornadoes on the other hand, we're good for one or two big ones a decade. Ottawa, where my son goes to university, just got hammered by a pair of them a few weeks ago. His area was largely unaffected but he saw some of the destruction when he was out cycling the following weekend.

As a big fan of Shirley Jackson I'm cautious about this one. Like you, I love the book and the 1963 version. I avoided the 1999 just on the basis of the word of mouth I heard. There's been good word on the show but I've also heard it diverges pretty wildly from Jackson's story. It is up as of today, I believe.
In the end, I don't have a lot TV time but am itching to see if I can manage some of the short season shows (like The Haunting...) that are out on cable and streaming nowadays.
