Sorry for not writing sooner. I thought this was a good thread. My memory is not very good and it has been quite a while. The boy that a few very special teachers helped in steering towards a happy and healthy adult life are now a world away. I may not remember their names or faces, but I remember bits of life's lessons they taught me. There legacy lives on even if in animosity because I know some of what they passed to me has gone on to my children and their children too.

When I was a kid I thought 2001 was science fiction. As I grew older I sat in a drive-in movie theater trying to explain the movie 2001 A Space Odyssey to my parents. I was ten years old and had read the book, so I could explain the symbolism to them. They did not like that much, but it was still science-fiction. Now 2001 is taught in history class to my grand children. I never understood when science-fiction became the future. BTW the reason 2001 was the year for the book is because Jan 1st 2001 was the first day of the new millennium. (not 2000 like everyone celebrated) I know because that is what Clarke told me and several of my friends when we met him on a book signing tour in the mid 80's for The Songs of Distant Earth.
