For a Friend I've Never Met

Oh, I don’t know just where to begin —
“Where it feels right,” you’d likely advise.
I smile; though merely a thought from within,
It is your voice, familiar and wise.

I have learned so much from you, my friend,
Some of it serious, some of it silly.
You’ve shown me when to stand firm, when it’s better to bend,
Or more prudent yet to ponder a water lily.

Yes, you make me think, but you make me laugh too.
Who knew laundry could be so funny it hurt?
Or that Halibut is capitalised, according to you,
While lowercase is for the churlish and curt?

As I found my way, you were my guide,
Although you did not know it.
Lo! This secret might prompt you to hide:
’Twas you spurred my inner poet.

By way of thanks, but only today —
I’ve pried off the Z, and used S instead.
Ah geez, that’s not enough sacrifice, eh?
All right, just this once: That’s not Z as in zee, it’s Z as in zed.

There is much left to say,
But all tributes must end;
To wrap this one up in the simplest way:
I’m happy indeed that you are my friend.
