Hormonal Ambivalence

Hormonal Ambivalence

Dedicated to a complex love-hate relationship with our indispensable chemical messengers

Hormones are vital (as anyone knows),
Steering everything from sleep to sex drive.
Without them, we couldn't feel or think —
Indeed, we need hormones to thrive.

Yet they behave in peculiar ways,
Some may wane while others surge.
Normal functioning is nigh impossible
When, at cross-purposes, their missions diverge.

They blithely swing this way and that
As though it were some sort of game,
Calling into question conduct (or sanity)
When in truth, it's hormones to blame.

The ebb and flow pushes us to extremes.
Their fluctuations can cause delight, then ire.
While a dearth creates an erotic drought,
A crest bears a flood of libidinous desire.

Appetite, metabolism, height, weight and more —
All are at the mercy of the messenger's whim.
And if the signal isn't sent or received,
The prospects can be fairly grim.

It's no use pretending you're never "hormonal";
No one is immune to their pull.
Men, women and children feel the effects:
We've all seen "whiny brat" and "raging bull."

It may seem reasonable for us to hope
For a modicum of synchronicity.
Alas, we humans and our hormones
Aren't destined for any such simplicity.
