I Am

I Am

When asked Who am I...

I Am

Who am I

You asked

To think about it

I am tasked

I am the daughter

Of an abusive man

Who learned to survive

As best I can

I am the little girl

Who grew up alone and afraid

I am the woman

And for him

I am the only one

I am the mother

Of four

Of the nicest kids

Couldn't ask for more

I am the survivor

Of a personal attack

One day at a time

I take my life back

I am the rhyme maker

And writer of prose

Starting with a few lines

But most of all

I am me

With all that encompasses

And that’s all I can be…
