The Indian Cry

Set me free!

I wake up every morning-

incomplete

look around, searching-

my only need

then sudden realization

reminds me

the social limitations

decreed

The years I’ve lived-

matter

the sex I belong to-

considered

the lineage, the ancestry-

liable

the character of she-

questioned

You are not yet of age-

confirmed

loving a man undisguised-

unacceptable

living together unmarried-

transgression

so many confines-

I’m fed up!

Did my loneliness you question?

remind me

does loving make me a criminal?

think please

did you establish the age of love?

tell me

did I decide to fall in love?

happened accidentally

Why do you care?

I’m happy!

why imposing these restrictions?

they choke me!

why can’t you see me glad?

so wretchedly!

why should young lovers stay hidden?

set me free!
