Author's Notes

"Inside Me explores loneliness and the human need to be heard. Arjun’s journey reflects the silent struggles many face when they feel unseen and unheard. Maya represents the inner voice we often ignore—the strength that guides us in our darkest moments. This story is a reminder that sometimes, the support we search for outside already exists within us. No one should feel alone, and even in silence, there is a voice inside us waiting to be heard."

Arjun had learned very early in life what it meant to be alone.

He lost his mother when he was just a child—the only person who had ever loved him without conditions. After her death, the house he lived in no longer felt like home. His father grew distant, and the rest of the family treated him like he didn’t belong.

He was there… but invisible.

No one asked how he felt.

No one cared enough to listen.

So Arjun stopped talking.

Years passed, and the silence became a part of him.

At twenty, Arjun worked at a small café in the city. It wasn’t much, but it kept him alive.

He did his job quietly—serving coffee, cleaning tables, avoiding trouble.

But trouble didn’t avoid him.

Whenever something went wrong, Arjun was the easiest person to blame.

And every time, he did the same thing.

He stayed silent.

One evening, after being harshly scolded for a mistake he hadn’t made, Arjun walked out of the café.

He didn’t argue.

He never did.

Instead, he walked to a quiet place behind an old building—a place no one really noticed.

There was a broken bench there.

Arjun sat down heavily, his chest tight with frustration.

“Why does this always happen to me…” he whispered.

Then—

What happened, dude?”

The voice was soft. Calm.

Arjun froze.

He looked around.

“Who’s there?” he asked.

A girl stood a few steps away.

“Relax,” she said with a small smile. “I’m Maya.”

Something about her felt… different.

She didn’t judge him.

She didn’t interrupt him.

For the first time in his life, someone listened.

So Arjun spoke.

He told her everything—the café, the humiliation, the loneliness he had carried for years.

Maya listened quietly, then said,

“Chill, dude. You didn’t do anything wrong. Next time, just say the truth. Calmly.”

It sounded simple.

But to Arjun… it meant everything.

The next day, when the same situation happened again, Arjun did something he had never done before.

He spoke.

Calmly. Clearly.

And for the first time, the truth was heard.

The manager realized his mistake.

“Sorry, Arjun,” he said.

Arjun didn’t know how to react.

No one had ever apologized to him before.

From that day on, everything began to change.

Every evening, Arjun returned to the same bench.

And every evening, Maya was there.

They talked for hours—about life, about fears, about dreams Arjun had never dared to think about.

Slowly, the quiet, broken boy started to change.

He smiled more.

Spoke more.

Believed in himself.

With Maya’s constant encouragement, Arjun worked harder than ever.

And one day, he took a step he never thought he could.

He started his own small business.

Time passed.

The boy who once stood silently in a café was now building something of his own.

A life.

A future.

And through it all, one thing never changed—

Every evening, Arjun went back to that bench.

Because that was where Maya waited.

One evening, his old manager happened to walk past that road.

He noticed Arjun sitting on the bench, smiling.

“Yeah, Maya… you’re right,” Arjun said.

The manager slowed down.

Something felt strange.

He looked carefully.

There was no one there.

Still, Arjun continued talking… laughing… responding.

The manager’s heart began to race.

He walked closer.

“Arjun?” he called.

Arjun turned.

“Sir!”

The manager looked beside him.

“Who were you talking to?”

Arjun smiled and pointed.

“Maya.”

The bench was empty.

The next few days were a blur.

The manager, deeply concerned, took Arjun to a doctor.

After several sessions, the truth came out.

Arjun had been alone for so long… that his mind created someone.

Someone who could listen.

Someone who could care.

Someone who could stay.

Maya… was never real.

"No… that’s not true,” Arjun said.

But deep inside, something broke.

Because for the first time…

She wasn’t there.

The silence returned.

And it felt heavier than ever.

Months passed.

With treatment and support, Arjun slowly began to heal.

But the memory of Maya never left him.

One evening, he went back to the same old bench.

The place where everything had begun.

He sat down quietly.

The air was still.

The space beside him… empty.

Tears rolled down his face.

“You were never real… were you?” he whispered.

No answer.

Only silence.

And then… a thought.

A realization.

Maya had always known what to say.

She had always guided him.

She had always believed in him.

Because…

She was never someone else.

She was the person he wanted to become.

The strength he never knew he had.

Arjun wiped his tears.

A small smile appeared on his face.

“Thank you,” he said softly

Then he stood up.

And walked away.

Alone.

But not lonely anymore.
