I had mentioned a couple weeks back about how my 9-11 poem was plagiarized and submitted to a church bulletin...I wrote Pastor Tim Goodman, and he put this out in the current February edition of the bulletin...very nice, and touching btw...

Here is an excerpt...it's on page seven of the bulletin, me thinks...

Corrigendum

It has recently come to our attention that a poem commemorating 9/11 was published in our October newsletter that was incorrectly credited in terms of authorship. We sincerely apologize to the author, Mr. Alan Jankowski, who published this poem We Shall Never Forget as a tribute to those affected by the tragedy of 9/11. It was originally published in our newsletter with the intention of bringing more healing to those who are still hurting and comfort to those who are still grieving. It is a true blessing that there are individuals like Mr. Jankowski who are gifted in writing and we thank the author for sharing his gift with the world. For all of you who enjoyed the poem and were encouraged by its words, here it is again in its entirety. May we together continue to seek to participate in Jesus’ ministry of healing and reconciliation for anyone who suffers.

Hey DM are you talking about the older ones amongst us or those that have an interest in deathly things...

Well, I'm certainly not talking about the ones who are already dead...if that is what you are implying when you say "older ones"...

Just saying...

Took me a little while to find the page detailing the contest itself rather than the terms and conditions, so here is the link for anyone else looking:

Oh, thanks for that Chrissey...I had trouble finding that page I posted...I had read about the contest in a newsletter, but the details they provided were a bit sketchy at best...

I think this one might be of interest to a couple of people here, btw...good luck to all, as usual...
Bump...

Note their listings under "Speculative Submissions"...

"Life Spinning Moments

Sort of fits the theme of the contest here on this fine site...and Silver Boomer does accept previously published stories...just saying...

Is it my imagination or are there some major issues with the "Upcoming Friends Birthdays" thingy...

For instance...it has been saying on my profile that LMB's birthday was coming up on the 28th...it doesn't say that anymore, and according to my calender it is still the 27th...and her birthday is listed as being today, the 27th in the forum...

Now...check her profile...

If you notice...she has one of those famously delicious Stories Space birthday cakes given January 26, 2012...but, if you look at the cake from last year...it was given on January 28, 2011...two days later...

What gives Gav?
Buts...

No ifs or ands...and yeah, welcome Bill to the forum...this is where it's at, if I say so myself...
Oh, I know the subject of intellectual property and the net, especially in relation to writers, has come up so many times recently you may not want to hear about...but, if you have any questions, this blog may be of interest...

In other words, don't ask me...I haven't a clue...

The Irish Writers' Centre has announced a few new competitions...poetry, short stories...all that good stuff...not sure if you have to be Irish for all these, but it probably helps...

Nice, it's been a bit neglected recently

I never heard of it before, but that don't mean much...my actual knowledge of poetry leaves a lot to be desired...

I signed up for Poets.org Poem of the Day...I get a poem delivered to my e-mail inbox every day...and sometimes I even get a chance to read them...

Something to consider...if I see something interesting, I post it here...kinda liked this one, and it fit with the snowy weather we're having here in New Jersey...
This Poem of the Day thingy over here needs a little attention I see, and this one appeared as Poem of the Day on Poets.org today and reading it, and looking outside my window it seems somehow appropriate...it was written by a Jamaican, and what someone from Jamaica knows about snow fairies is beyond me...

"Claude McKay was born in Jamaica, West Indies. He was educated by his older brother, who possessed a library of English novels, poetry, and scientific texts. At the age of twenty, McKay published a book of verse called Songs of Jamaica, recording his impressions of black life in Jamaica in dialect.

In 1912, he travelled to the United States to attend Tuskegee Institute. He remained there only a few months, leaving to study agriculture at Kansas State University.

He published two sonnets, "The Harlem Dancer" and "Invocation," in 1917, and would later use the same poetic form to record his reactionary views on the injustices of black life in America. In addition to social and political concerns, McKay wrote on a variety of subjects, from his Jamaican homeland to romantic love, with a use of passionate language.

During the twenties, McKay developed an interest in Communism and travelled to Russia and then to France where he met Edna St. Vincent Millay and Sinclair Lewis.

In 1934, McKay moved back to the United States and lived in Harlem, New York. Losing faith in Communism, he turned his attention to the teachings of various spiritual and political leaders in Harlem, eventually converting to Catholicism.

McKay's viewpoints and poetic achievements in the earlier part of the twentieth century set the tone for the Harlem Renaissance and gained the deep respect of younger black poets of the time, including Langston Hughes. He died in 1948."

The Snow Fairy
Claude McKay

I

Throughout the afternoon I watched them there,
Snow-fairies falling, falling from the sky,
Whirling fantastic in the misty air,
Contending fierce for space supremacy.
And they flew down a mightier force at night,
As though in heaven there was revolt and riot,
And they, frail things had taken panic flight
Down to the calm earth seeking peace and quiet.
I went to bed and rose at early dawn
To see them huddled together in a heap,
Each merged into the other upon the lawn,
Worn out by the sharp struggle, fast asleep.
The sun shone brightly on them half the day,
By night they stealthily had stol'n away.

II

And suddenly my thoughts then turned to you
Who came to me upon a winter's night,
When snow-sprites round my attic window flew,
Your hair disheveled, eyes aglow with light.
My heart was like the weather when you came,
The wanton winds were blowing loud and long;
But you, with joy and passion all aflame,
You danced and sang a lilting summer song.
I made room for you in my little bed,
Took covers from the closet fresh and warm,
A downful pillow for your scented head,
And lay down with you resting in my arm.
You went with Dawn. You left me ere the day,
The lonely actor of a dreamy play.

Thanks for the link. The one piece I had published was in a similar work about surviving cancer.

If you read it though, they're not necessarily looking for stuff that's cancer related...they're basically looking for anything as far as I can tell...
Bumping this one...Bump...

I had forgotten about this one, but they are trying to set a record so that should give everyone who submits something a better chance than the usual submission call...

They really are looking for stuff still, until next month...I just sent them a story and two poems and got this response...they probably should learn how to spell "cancer" though...

to me
Alan Jankowski,

We have received your submission. On behalf of all of us here I would like to thank you for being a part of our world record attempt and helping to raise money for the American Caner Society.

We will keep you informed as we move through the publication and Guinness World Records evaluation processes.

Scorpions and killer bees

Hey Sharon...I think it's time to fatten up the killer bees and maybe give the scorpions steroids...this one's a bit annoying, not that all plagiarism isn't...

This is a slightly cleaned-up version of what I posted over on Facebook earlier...

You know, just when you think you've seen the lowest of low-life, lower than whale crap plagiarizing pond scum crawl out of the woodwork another comes along and lowers the bar...

I mean, plagiarizing my 9-11 Tribute poem, and putting it in a church bulletin...don't people go to Hell for stuff like this? Check page three...

http://www.creeksideumc.com/yahoo_site_admin/assets/docs/Creekside_Connection_Oct_2011.301192512.pdf

After I calm down a bit, I'd like to send a note to Pastor Tim noting not only how wrong plagiarism is, but reminding him of the sanctity of 9-11 among other things...

I'd like to see this Rodney Sheffar person, who I assume is a member of the church, excommunicated, embarrassed in the next bulletin, and maybe sent to Hell for a couple of eternities...and that's just for starters...
